Jackals Win Game 1 Late

Colter, Jamison Give Jamestown Best-Of-Five Series Lead Over Sudbury

SUDBURY, Ontario — Unable to win on the road in Sudbury during the regular season, the Jamestown Jackals picked the right time to change their fortunes.

Derrick Colter’s jumper with 17 seconds remaining broke a 117-all tie as No. 4 Jamestown beat the top-seeded Sudbury Five 121-117 in the opening game of a best-of-five Basketball Super League semifinal series Friday night inside Sudbury Community Arena.

Colter and Devante Jamison scored 19 points apiece to lead six Jackals in double figures. Deon Stroud had 17 points; Tyshon Pickett had 15 points, six assists and five rebounds; Tafari Beckford had 14 points and seven rebounds; and Khalil Gracey had 13 points.

Game 2 of the series is Sunday at 4 p.m. back in Sudbury.

The Five led by as many as 12 with 6:38 remaining in the second quarter Friday and led by eight heading into the fourth quarter.

A Charlie Marquardt jumper gave Sudbury a 12-point lead with 5:51 left before Jamestown went on a 12-0 run that included back-to-back 3-pointers from Colter, assisted by Jamison, to tie the game at 111-all with 3:36 left.

Diego Bernard gave the Five a 113-111 lead, but Stroud answered with a dunk to tie the game once again with 2:05 remaining. Jalon Miller and Duane Notice scored on Sudbury’s next two possessions to make it 117-113 with 1:20 to play, but that would be the final time the Five would score.

Stroud made a pair of free throws with just over a minute remaining and Jamison scored on a layup to tie the game with 47 seconds left.

After Miller missed a 3-point attempt, Jamison got the rebound, and 34 seconds later, Colter gave the Jackals their first lead since the score was 18-17 with 2:52 left in the first quarter.

Jamestown was charged with just three turnovers while scoring 14 points off eight Sudbury turnovers. The Jackals also won the paint battle 56-40 and the bench-scoring battle 50-32.

Miller had 27 points, Marquardt had 24 and Ja’myrin Jackson — the league’s leading scorer during the regular season — scored 23.

After Game 2 on Sunday in Sudbury, the series will shift to Jamestown for Game 3 at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Jamestown Community College’s Physical Education Complex. An if-necessary Game 4 would be Friday in Jamestown with a possible Game 5 next Sunday back in Sudbury.
