Salamanca Defeats Wilson In Class B2, Claiming First Title Since 2012
BUFFALO — The last time the Salamanca girls basketball team won a Section VI championship was over a decade ago in 2012 when the Warriors took home the Class C1 title.
Salamanca was favored as the 2-seed to end that drought on Sunday afternoon in the Class B2 final against Wilson at Buffalo State Sports Arena.
It did not take long for that to become a reality with the Warriors building a 24-14 lead at halftime and cruising to their first championship in 13 years with a 51-32 victory over the 4-seeded Lakewomen.
While Leilene McComber has been the primary force driving the Salamanca offense this season, she received a big boost from Skyla Dowdy in the championship game as she matched her point total with 16 points which equaled the Wilson total between them. Mackenzie Crouse, Madisyn Lafferty, Maliyah Foster and Ella Crouse provided the rest that was necessary for the victory.
Wilson was led by Addison Elia with 8 points.
Salamanca will play for the overall Class B championship against B1 winner Newfane on Wednesday back at Buffalo State Sports Arena at 5 p.m.
