No. 5 Maple Grove is a youth-laden team that may see its best days in the coming years.

Don’t tell that to Claire Price.

The Red Dragons’ lone senior starter hit a pair of 3-pointers during a 9-0 run to open the fourth quarter as Maple Grove beat No. 8 Franklinville 45-34 in a Section VI Class C girls basketball semifinal Wednesday at Jamestown Community College.

“I wasn’t happy with the third quarter. I didn’t think that we had the effort and the drive. We gave up too many rebounds, we weren’t crashing the boards,” Maple Grove head coach Mark Mansfield said. “We had a little talk at the end of the quarter and you could see what happened in the fourth quarter.”

Price finished with 12 points, three steals, three rebounds and two assists, while junior Bryanna Cornell had 12 points, 17 rebounds and five steals for the Red Dragons, who will take on No. 3 Frewsburg in the 2 p.m. championship game Saturday back at the Physical Education Complex.

Maple Grove led for the entire first quarter Wednesday before a second quarter that featured four lead changes.

The Red Dragons took a 19-17 lead on an Alex Halstrom 3-pointer with 3:05 remaining in the first half and went ahead by four two possessions later when freshman Morgan Caldwell ripped a rebound away from the Panthers and scored on a putback in the lane.

“All year, she’s been the one we put on their point guard, bigger or smaller, younger or older, it doesn’t matter. She causes trouble,” Mansfield said of Caldwell. ” … I’m looking forward to another three full seasons with her.”

With 17 seconds left in the first half, Caldwell’s lone 3-pointer of the game made it 24-19.

But Franklinville took a 30-29 lead into the fourth quarter, thanks to an 11-5 third quarter during which Maple Grove was just 1 of 13 from the field, including 0 of 6 from 3-point range.

After the break, Price tied the game on a free throw and then made it 33-30 on a 3-pointer after Cornell grabbed an offensive rebound.

“It doesn’t matter whether it’s practice or games; every shot that goes up is her ball. That’s her mentality,” Mansfield said of Cornell. “She was up against the biggest, strongest girl that she’s had to face, and besides a few of her post-ups, I thought she did a fantastic job. … I can’t say enough about her.”

Cornell then made it a five-point game before Caldwell found Price for her third 3-pointer of the night to make it 38-30.

“This is what Claire has done all year. When we need a change in momentum … most of the time it’s Claire who steps up and makes that shot or makes a steal,” Mansfield said. “In the big moments, usually she’s there.”

The Panthers never got closer than seven the rest of the way.

While the Red Dragons were able to take care of the upstart Panthers, who beat No. 1 Holland in the quarterfinals, they’ll have their work cut out for them Saturday against the defending Section VI and Far West Region champions in Frewsburg.

“One thing I know is going to happen is these girls are going to put it out there, it’s going to be 100%,” Mansfield said. ” … We’re not going to just crawl into a hole because we’re supposed to lose by 40 or whatever. You’re going to have to play us for 32 minutes.”

NOTES: Caldwell had 9 points, five assists, four steals and three rebounds; Halstrom had 8 points and three rebounds; and Dani Trim had 4 points, five rebounds and three steals for Maple Grove, which shot 13 of 49 from the field, including 6 of 21 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 16 times. … McKenzie Chase and Grace Cornell had 12 points apiece for Franklinville, which shot 12 of 52 from the field, including 2 of 14 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 20 times.
