After beating No. 2 Randolph in Wednesday’s Section VI Class C semifinal, Saturday’s title game was expected to be a formality for No. 3 Frewsburg.
After a closely contested opening five minutes against No. 5 Maple Grove, that’s what it turned into for the Bears.
Frewsburg outscored the Red Dragons 16-4 over the final three-plus minutes of the first quarter and coasted to a 66-32 victory in the sectional championship game at Jamestown Community College.
“To be able to cap it off with a sectional title is goal No. 1,” Frewsburg head coach Sierra Beaver said, “but we feel like we have more left in us.”
Sophomore Jadyn Trocki led the Bears with 18 points and 10 assists, while her senior sister, Teghan, had 17 points, including five 3-pointers, inside the Physical Education Complex.

“That team has so much talent that if they are all hitting their shots like they were tonight, I don’t see how you beat them,” Maple Grove head coach Mark Mansfield said.
Frewsburg, a six-time sectional champion, will now wait for Section V to decide its representative before next Saturday’s 4 p.m. Far West Regional at Buffalo State University. Bloomfield and Keshequa will play for the Rochester area’s title Tuesday.
“You don’t want to come out lacking intensity. It was a really emotional game against Randolph,” Beaver said. ” … We talked a lot about coming out with intensity and effort, and we can reward ourselves with a day off (Sunday).”
Maple Grove was a worthy opponent for the Bears early Saturday afternoon, but eventually Frewsburg’s talent and experience took over the game.
Alex Halstrom hit a pair of 3-pointers and Claire Price added another as Maple Grove was tied with the Bears 13-all, but Jadyn Trocki drilled a 3-pointer with 3:20 remaining in the opening quarter to give her team a 16-13 lead.

They would never relinquish it.
That triple started a 13-0 run that included a 3-pointer from senior Taytum Jimerson and another from Jadyn Trocki. When the sophomore point guard finished a hesitation layup with just over a minute remaining, Frewsburg led 26-13.
“Frewsburg starts really fast and comes right after you,” Mansfield said. “We had to match them in the first quarter, that intensity, and I thought we did a nice job.”
The Bears went on a 16-0 run to end the second quarter and led 50-21 at halftime. All told in the opening 16 minutes, Frewsburg went 18 of 32 from the field, including 9 of 18 from 3-point range.
“I think we still missed a couple of inside bunnies,” Beaver said, ” … but as far as shooting percentage, that’s how you want to start.”

Maple Grove never made it closer than the 19-point halftime deficit over the final two quarters.
“We didn’t want them shooting layups. If they make their 3-pointers, what are we going to do? If we hop out on them they go by you,” Mansfield said. “Every one of those girls have that potential to go right by you because they are so athletic and so fast.”
With Randolph and the rest of Section VI in their rear-view mirror, the Bears will now focus on the state playoffs. After losing to Duanesburg in last year’s state semifinals, their hope is that they get another chance at a title in Troy two weekends from now.
“We’ll go scout on Tuesday and see. I feel like Keshequa will come out of Section V. We’ve been watching film on them for a few weeks now in preparation,” Beaver said. “Once we know who is finalized, we’ll start putting our game plan together.”
NOTES: Senior Ava Jimerson had 11 points and seven rebounds, while senior Taytum Jimerson had 10 points, three steals and three rebounds for Frewsburg, which shot 24 of 52 from the field, including 11 of 24 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over seven times. … Junior Bryanna Cornell had 14 points and eight rebounds for Maple Grove, which shot 11 of 43 from the field, including 3 of 13 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 17 times. … Teghan Trocki and Cornell were awarded the Heart of a Champion Character Award by Cross Training Athletics and Ilio DiPaolo’s Restaurant
