Kay Sirianni was pleased with the way the top-seeded Southwestern girls basketball team performed Saturday in its Section VI B1 quarterfinal.
“It was nice to get our first playoff win this year, sparked by our defense,” the Trojans head coach said after the convincing 70-37 win over No. 8 Medina at the Southwestern High School gym. “Gianna (Sirianni) and Braya Beaver shot well and Marlana Cresanti dominated on the boards.”
The numbers don’t lie.
Gianna Sirianni poured in 29 points, including 11 in the first quarter when the hosts jumped out to a 17-9 lead; Braya Beaver added 13 points, five rebounds and eight steals; Ellie Pearson scored 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds; and Marlana Cresanti collected 10 boards and also had eight steals. As a team, the Trojans amassed 34 steals.
Alex Demmer paced Medina with 16 points and Honesty Hill chipped in 14.

Southwestern (18-3) will now meet No. 4 Newfane (15-5) at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the semifinals at Maryvale High School.

SALAMANCA — Second-seeded Salamanca moved on to the Section VI Class B2 semifinals after dispatching No. 7 Roy-Hart 68-40 in the quarterfinals.
Leading the way for the Warriors (15-6) were Leilene McComber with 19 points, Mackenzie Crouse with 12 and Skyla Dowdy with 11.
Leading 30-18 at halftime, Salamanca put the game away by outscoring the visitors 22-9 in the third period.
CourtneyAquilina had 10 points to pace Roy-Hart (11-9).
The Warriors will be back in action at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when they meet No. 3 Eden in the semifinals at Maryvale High School.
