In the span of less than two minutes of the first quarter Saturday afternoon, Jamestown boys basketball coach Billy Miley burned a pair of timeouts.

The specifics of what he said during those stoppages in play were unknown, but the expression on his face told the story.

He clearly wasn’t happy.

“I think we were just kind of flat with energy,” Miley said, “and when that happens you kind of miss some shots you normally make and we weren’t intense defensively.”

After that, the countenance of the second-year coach improved considerably.

Jaydian Johnson led three players in double figures with 20 points to go with nine rebounds, three assists and two steals as the Red & Green used several scoring spurts to build a comfortable lead after the sluggish start en route to a 68-55 nonleague victory over the Park School of the Monsignor Martin Association at McElrath Gymnasium.

The win improved Jamestown’s record to 14-2, heading into Wednesday’s Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 game at Frontier.

Continued effort like the Red & Green displayed in the final three quarters Saturday should serve it well as the regular season nears its conclusion.

“That’s what we kind of stressed is the consistency and effort,” Miley said. “Unfortunately, due to some non-competitive games we’ve been in, it’s a little bit easy to kind of coast, and it’s hard to convince guys that teams can play a little bit.”

Once Jamestown gained its collective footing, though, it received contributions from multiple sources.

Gavin Johnson, starting in place of an ill Carson Panebianco, scored 16 points, dished out three assists and had two blocked shots; Dominic Gonzalez added 15 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals; and Elijah Farmer did a little bit of everything, finishing with 8 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, a blocked shot and a steal.

As a team, Jamestown connected on 29 of 66 attempts from the field, had 18 assists on 29 made baskets, and used scoring runs of 12-0 in the second quarter, 14-0 spanning the end of the first half and the start of the second, and 10-2 to begin the final period.

So even though the Red & Green trailed 19-11 early in the second quarter, it led 30-25 by intermission and 47-35 after three periods. In the fourth quarter, Jamestown’s advantage grew to as many as 19 and it coasted the rest of the way, prompting Miley to award his team a grade of 7 on a scale of 1 to 10.

He was particularly impressed with Gavin Johnson, who was inserted into the starting lineup with Panebianco sidelined.

“He’s able to make some shots,” Miley said, “but he’s doing all the hustle plays. He’s been kind of our spark off the bench the last few and he was able to start the last couple with Carson being sick, and he’s done a nice job with it.”

NOTES: Kamron Barge led Park with 23 points and Elijah Greene added 16. … The visitors, who are coached by former University at Buffalo standout Rod Middleton, shot 19 of 52 from the field and turned the ball over 17 times compared to seven for the Red & Green. … In the junior varsity game, Jamestown improved to 11-3 following an 86-32 victory over Park. Julian Jackson led the way with 12 points and Jenson Hernandez added 10.
