RED DRAGONS ADVANCE

BARKER — Liam Colburn scored 16 of his game-high 24 points during the first half as No. 14 Maple Grove beat No. 11 Barker 54-47 in a Class C qualifier.

“Liam having a huge first half kind of boosted us up too,” Maple Grove head coach Graham Soffel said. “He’s capable of doing that every night. He’s finally hitting his stride. Luckily we have another year with him.”

Ethan Verbosky added 13 points for the Red Dragons, who will travel to No. 6 Ellicottville for a Thursday prequarterfinal.

“We definitely feel like we’re better than what our record shows. In the second half we’ve turned things around,” Soffel said. “These guys continue to work hard and believe that they’re a good team. We’ve had some close games with teams in our league, but we fell short early in the season.”

Wyatt Sherman scored 11 points and Anthony Taliaferro had 9 for Barker.

“I knew they had a few guys who could shoot. I think they had three guys averaging 10 or more points,” Soffel said of the Bulldogs. “Our defense gave them a lot of issues, luckily we took advantage of that in the first half.”
