JCC Women’s 10-Game Winning Streak Comes To An End Saturday

The Jamestown Community College women’s basketball team saw its 10-game winning streak come to an end in a hard-fought battle with four-year school Bryant & Stratton of Buffalo on Saturday afternoon.

Jamestown CC snagged an early 5-2 lead off of a long-range 3-pointer from freshman Alyson Canfield.

That advantage was short-lived as Bryant & Stratton scored 11 of the next 14 points to go up 13-7.

Jamestown CC quickly answered back with their sophomores, Jennica Berens’ layup and Myla Truitt’s elbow jumper, tying the game at 13-13.

The Bobcats closed the quarter strong, and Jamestown CC was trailing 17-13 at the break.

Jamestown CC’s offense went cold in the second quarter, shooting 1 of 5 from 3-point range, and Bryant & Stratton was able to build a seven-point edge entering halftime.

Jamestown CC clawed back in the third. Midway through the frame, Jamestown CC cut the deficit to two at 35-33 when Truitt buried a triple. She led all scorers with 25 points.

Jamestown CC got to within a point at the 3:36 mark of the quarter on another bucket from Truitt, which made the game 39-38.

The seesaw affair continued into the fourth. Jamestown CC fell back down five at the 5:04 mark, when Kendra Altadonna swished a bomb to bring the score to 52-50.

After the Bobcats built another seven-point lead, Jamestown CC once again scrapped to keep it close.

Truitt splashed home a 3-pointer from the wing to make it a 66-62 game, but that was all the scoring with Jamestown CC falling by four.

The women’s basketball team took home a hard-fought win over Monroe CC 72-68 last Wednesday night. This victory was the 10th straight for the Jayhawks.

Jamestown CC jumped out to a quick lead, 14-3, thanks to some ferocious defense and a transition bucket by Jennica Berens, who just missed a triple-double by 2 points.

Monroe CC clawed back, and Jamestown CC saw a 17-14 lead after the first quarter.

Jamestown CC’s lead completely evaporated midway through the second with the game tied 23-23.

The Jayhawks build the advantage back to five on the back of a 3-pointer from Andrea Johnson.

Jamestown CC would take a one-point lead to the halftime break.

Jamestown CC trailed for the first time late in the third, with the score sitting at 44-41.

That lead would last to the seven-minute mark of the fourth, where another Jerica Barnard field goal in the paint evened it at 53-53. She finished with a team-high 14.

Jamestown CC took command after that; sophomore Myla Truitt, who also scored 14, hit a couple of mid-range jumpers to see Jamestown CC expand the edge to 63-55.

The Jayhawks never looked back, closing in on the four-point win.

The ladies return to league action Wednesday when they host Erie CC at 5:30 p.m. for Sophomore Night.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Jamestown Community College men’s basketball team dropped their latest home contest, 77-50 to Monroe CC on Wednesday, mainly due to poor shooting — 31% from the floor — and 23 turnovers.

Jamestown CC looked to keep it close early; a Tamir Barrant bucket had them down just two at the seven-minute mark of the first half.

Jamestown CC’s deficit would grow to 11 quickly, with Mark Latrell doing most of the damage off the bench for the Tribunes.

A late-half Travis Castro 3-pointer gave the Jayhawks some life, but they still trailed 39-24 at the break.

That deficit reached 17 when Federico Foddai drilled one of his three long-range bombs on the day. The freshman finished with a team-high 15.

Jamestown CC couldn’t find an answer for the athleticism of Monroe CC, which poured in 58 points in the paint.

The loss dropped Jamestown CC’s record down to 4-20 on the season.

The Jayhawks have a week off before they finish the home schedule with Erie CC in town next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

SWIMMING & DIVING

FREDONIA — The Jamestown Community College swimming and diving teams wrapped up the 2024-25 regular season with a resounding win over four-year school Fredonia State University on Wednesday.

Jamestown CC made the short trip out Route 60 and picked up a 105-73 win on the men’s side and 104-88 for the women.

“Great finish to the regular season. The kids swam especially well tonight, and that’s more positive momentum going into our championship season,” said an excited head coach Todd Conklin. “I think they are all ready and excited for championship season. We start with regionals and then focus on nationals.”

The men were led by reigning Jamestown CC athlete of the week Kyle Dean, who broke the program’s backstroke record with a 55.62 time almost 8 seconds ahead of second place. Dean also won the 200-yard freestyle and was part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that won along with Zach Johnson, Christian Merrill and Cameron Milewski.

Aside from the 200-yard freestyle relay, Johnson also won both the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke, a swim he captured by over two seconds.

Milewski was at the top in the two diving events with winning attempts in the 1-meter and 3-meter events.

On the ladies side, reigning Region 3 swimmer of the week Anna Jones took home the 500-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly.

Haleigha Hardy, who also plays soccer and softball for the Jayhawks, won the 100-yard breaststroke by over 4 seconds.

Emily Swan took down the competition in the 200-yard freestyle, while her cousin Ashlynn Swan won both of the diving events for the ladies.

Lastly, freshman Desiree Putt continues to shine with a win in the 100-yard backstroke, with close to a 6-second gap to second place.

“I’m very proud of where we are and what we have accomplished so far. I personally know they have a lot more to give, and I think next weekend is going to just be a stepping stone toward nationals,” Conklin added. “This group is truly growing together and starting to believe in each swim. I think you will start to see some more records fall next weekend.”

Jamestown CC is looking for sweet success as they head to the Region 3 championships on Valentine’s Day, Friday, Feb. 14, at Erie CC.

The Jayhawk ladies are the defending regional champs, while the men took third a season ago.

Starting at $2.99/week.
