Four Area Boys Teams Earn Top Seeds

Four local teams have locked up No. 1 seeds for the Section VI boys basketball playoffs, which begin Tuesday.

Top seeds locally include: Jamestown in Class AAA, Salamanca in Class B2, Randolph in Class C and Panama in Class D.

Class C figures to be the most competitive bracket among Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association teams with five listed in the latest New York State Sportswriters Association’s weekly rankings.

In qualifiers Tuesday, No. 13 Cattaraugus-Little Valley will travel to No. 12 Brocton, No. 15 Cassadaga Valley will visit No. 10 North Collins and No. 14 Maple Grove will make the long trip to No. 11 Barker.

Winners of those games will turn around for Thursday prequarterfinals. No. 8 Chautauqua Lake — a state honorable mention — will host the winner of Tuesday’s WNY Maritime/Global Concepts game. No. 5 Frewsburg will host the Cattaraugus-Little Valley/Brocton winner. No. 7 Gowanda — another state honorable mention — will host the Cassadaga Valley/North Collins winner. No. 6 Ellicottville will host the Maple Grove/Barker winner.

Should those teams advance, they will run into the Class C cream of the crop locally Saturday.

No. 1 Randolph — the state’s No. 5 team — will host the WNY Maritime/Global Concepts/Chautauqua Lake winner. No. 4 Westfield — the state’s No. 4 team — will host the Cattaraugus-Little Valley/Brocton/Frewsburg winner. No. 2 Holland — the state’s No. 26 team — will host the Cassadaga Valley/North Collins/Gowanda winner. No. 3 Franklinville — another state honorable mention — will host the Maple Grove/Barker/Ellicottville winner.

Class C’s semifinals will be Tuesday, March 4 at Jamestown Community College at 6 and 7:45 p.m.

The final will also be at Jamestown CC on Friday, March 7 at 7:45 p.m.

In Class D, No. 1 Panama — the state’s top-ranked team — has already advanced to a 6 p.m. semifinal at Jamestown CC on Monday, March 3. The Panthers will take on the winner of Thursday’s quarterfinal between No. 5 Sherman — a state honorable mention — at No. 4 Clymer.

The other semifinal Monday, March 3 at Jamestown CC will feature No. 3 Pine Valley and No. 2 Forestville — another state honorable mention.

The Class D final is Friday, March 7 back at Jamestown CC at 6 p.m.

In Class B2, No. 9 Falconer — a state honorable mention — will travel to No. 8 JFK for a Thursday prequarterfinal. That same day, No. 10 Silver Creek will visit No. 7 Allegany-Limestone.

In quarterfinals Saturday, No. 1 Salamanca — the state’s No. 5 team — will host the winner of Falconer and JFK.

Class B2 semifinals will be Wednesday, March 5 and Thursday, March 6 at 5 p.m. at Buffalo State University. The Class B2 final will be Saturday, March 8 at noon back at Buffalo State.

In Class B1, No. 9 Southwestern will take on No. 8 East Community in a prequarterfinal Thursday at MST Prep High School.

Should the Trojans win, they will travel to No. 1 Akron for a quarterfinal Saturday. Also Saturday, No. 6 Fredonia — the state’s No. 19 team — will take on No. 3 Middle Early College at the Grabiarz School of Excellence.

Class B1 semifinals will be Thursday, March 6 at Buffalo State at 6:30 and 8 p.m. The Class B1 final is Saturday, March 8 at 1:45 p.m. back at Buffalo State.

No. 11 Dunkirk is the only local team in the Class A2 bracket. The Marauders will travel to No. 6 Lewiston-Porter for a Wednesday prequarterfinal. Should Dunkirk win, it would travel to No. 3 Olean for a Friday quarterfinal.

The Class A2 semifinals are Wednesday, March 5 at 6:30 and 8 p.m. at Buffalo State. The final is set for Friday, March 7 at 6 p.m. back at Buffalo State.

In the three-team Class AAA bracket, No. 1 Jamestown — the state’s No. 19 team — has already advanced to the 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 8 final at Buffalo State. The Red & Green await the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal between No. 3 Lancaster and No. 2 Niagara Falls.
