With a roster consisting of four juniors, a sophomore, a freshman and three eighth-graders, most of Jamestown’s improvements in girls basketball can be considered “baby steps.”

The Red & Green took another Tuesday night.

Eighth-grader Payton Gibbs gave Jamestown the lead for good with 44.5 seconds remaining and junior Anna Engquist sealed the game with a pair of free throws as the Red & Green beat Frontier 54-50 for their fifth straight win.

“We’re the lower tier, but the teams in the middle tier are Frontier and Clarence,” Jamestown head coach Ken Ricker said postgame. ” … We had the Clarence game at home and let it get away. This one could’ve gotten away, but we’ve grown.”

With the win, Jamestown improved to 9-7 overall and 2-5 in Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 play to move ahead of Frontier and Williamsville North, which visits McElrath Gymnasium tonight.

“I called like five plays the whole game. They just went and played,” Ricker said. “When Jamestown is really good, it’s because I’m hands-off and they just go play. They’re getting there quickly.”

The Red & Green led 13-11 after the first quarter Tuesday, but the Falcons (7-8, 2-6) took a 22-19 lead into halftime after Jamestown shot just 2 of 16 from the floor in the second quarter.

Frontier turned the ball over 10 times in the third quarter and the Red & Green took a 37-35 lead after Jamestown sophomore Makena Pryce hit back-to-back 3-pointers.

“We tried to just space the floor and let Carley (Daniels) go to work,” Ricker said of his eighth-grade point guard. ” … We knew Anna might get some 3s at the top and we got Makena going.”

The Falcons tied the game with 6:45 remaining on a bucket from Sophia Petrie, but the Red & Green became the beneficiaries of a Frontier miscue a minute later when a Falcons player put a defensive rebound back up and into Jamestown’s basket to make it 39-37.

Frontier took a two-point lead on its next two possessions, but then foul trouble began to hit the Falcons, who were already playing without four regulars. Petrie fouled out with 5:17 remaining.

Engquist broke a 45-all tie when she hit her lone 3-pointer of the night with 2:09 remaining.

“It was huge for Anna. It was so nice that she had that confidence,” Ricker said. “To fight (Sofija Urbanovica) all night long, then she hits the 3 and makes the big free throws, it’s great for her. … It’s very rewarding.”

Gibbs then turned one of Frontier’s 23 turnovers into the go-ahead bucket with under a minute remaining.

Maria Theisen fouled out in the final minute and Jamestown eventually took a 52-48 lead with 16.9 seconds remaining. Urbanovica, a foreign exchange student averaging 17.9 points and 13 rebounds per game entering Tuesday, then scored on a putback with 4.7 seconds remaining, but fouled out after the ensuing inbounds pass and Engquist calmly sank a pair of free throws with 2.6 seconds left to make it a four-point game.

Playing with just four players, the Falcons inbounded and were unable to get a desperation shot off at the buzzer.

“This is education, this is school. We’re not in the NBA. To see the growth and education in kids is just awesome,” Ricker said. “They all played their butts off.”

Now the Red & Green will turn their attention to Williamsville North, which will enter tonight’s game 3-10 overall and 1-6 in ECIC Division 1.

“For the juniors, they have three regular-season games left and then senior year. It goes so fast,” Ricker said. “We’ve said ‘we’re young, we’re young,’ but let’s go win. … We have to come back from this great emotion and do it again.”

NOTES: Pryce had 13 points and eight rebounds; Engquist had 12 points and six rebounds; Daniels had 11 points, six assists and three rebounds; and freshman Aiyanna Stam had 15 rebounds and six steals for Jamestown, which shot 20 of 86 from the field, including 5 of 42 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over nine times. … Urbanovica had 22 points for Frontier, which shot 18 of 47 from the field, including 3 of 9 from 3-point range.
