As he collected his belongings before leaving the visitors’ locker room Tuesday night, after delivering his postgame comments, Nick Bertrando added one more bit of information.

Fredonia’s 60-47 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 boys basketball win over Southwestern was the 100th of his coaching career.

The Hillbillies’ 13-point win was a fitting one for a Bertrando-coached team.

They were efficient on offense: 25 of 43 from the field.

They forced 16 turnovers by the Trojans.

And four players scored in double figures, led by Colin Luce with 14 points.

“With this really being the last week before the playoffs coming up, we wanted to be patient and execute on the offensive side of things,” Bertrando said. “Last time we played them, a testament to their defense, they forced us to take a lot of shots that were not good shots for us, which led to defensive rebounds and transition points.”

Fredonia — which lost to Southwestern 63-47 last Monday — led 15-9 after the first quarter and by four at halftime Tuesday before a strong third quarter from both teams.

Southwestern cut its deficit to just one on an Oscar Harris 3-pointer early in the period to make the game as close as it was since it was tied 2-2 early in the first quarter.

“We moved a kid up from jayvee, Oscar Harris, who played his fourth game tonight,” Southwestern head coach Aaron Emley said. “I thought that was a bright spot. I thought he sort of did what I’ve been looking for. You have to play off (Landon Hooks and Chase Hartnett). Everybody knows they are our primary offensive weapons. When they draw those double teams, you have to be ready to make a play off of that. We need more of that.”

Brennan Lincoln scored in the lane and R.J. Koopman hit a 3-pointer to push the Hillbillies’ lead back up to six, before Hartnett answered with a 3-pointer and Hooks scored inside for the Trojans.

But Southwestern went cold on its next five possessions, which included a pair of missed 3-point attempts and three turnovers. Fredonia closed the quarter on a 9-3 run to lead 45-38 entering the fourth quarter.

“In the playoffs, as the games get tighter, it’s really going to be won in the half-court. If you can take care of the ball, you really aren’t going to get a lot of transition opportunities. You really are going to have to lock it down on the defensive side of things in the half-court, talk, communicate and rotate,” Bertrando said. “On the offensive side of things, take care of the ball and be efficient with the shots that you get because as the playoffs ramp up, the deeper you get, each possession carries a little more weight.”

Luce scored on the Hillbillies’ opening possession of the final period and the Trojans would not get closer than seven the rest of the way.

“Fredonia plays very balanced. That’s just good basketball. They are not running specific sets for five different guys,” Emley said. “You run sets for one or two guys and you hope guys can play off of that. I had one who was able to do that tonight and the rest were not able to.”

Southwestern — which hosts nonleague Chautauqua Lake on Thursday — fell to 7-12 overall and closed league play at 4-8.

“Tonight, without my point guard, I had to move a kid there who really hasn’t had to play there much for the last six to 10 games,” Emley said of playing without senior Connor Young. “Moving this game to this week, we had to do it because we had four other games moved throughout the season. I didn’t want to move it to the vacation week but we dealt with what we had tonight.”

Fredonia wrapped up an 11-9 regular season with a 6-6 league mark.

“Part of me is excited that league play is finally over now. You just had 12 games of intense basketball. … There are no nights off, whether you are home or on the road,” Bertrando said. ” … It’s fun and exciting, but at the same time it is exhausting. I’ll put this league up against any other league in Section VI.”
