CLYMER — The scouting report, according to Sherman coach Cory Emory, was clear.

The Wildcats had to find a way to successfully deal with the Clymer one-two punch of Carson White and Roman Wassink.

Easier said than done.

White, a 6-foot-4 junior, scored a game-high 18 points (on 5 of 9 shooting the from the arc), grabbed five rebounds and collected a pair of steals, and Wassink, a 6-5 sophomore, added 13 points and 10 boards to propel the Pirates to a 46-39 victory in a Section VI Class D quarterfinal game Thursday night.

The win vaulted Clymer (11-10) into the semifinals against No. 1 Panama at 6 p.m. Monday at Jamestown Community College. Sherman ends its season 11-10.

The key to the Pirates’ returning to the semifinals for the fifth straight season were the performances of White and Wassink along with a strong team defensive effort. That combination allowed the hosts to survive a tough night at the foul line where they connected on just 12 of 29 attempts. That mediocre percentage was offset by the Wildcats connecting on only 14 of 28 charity tosses.

“Carson hit some big shots … when Sherman had momentum, and Roman just works hard,” Clymer coach Irv King said. “He’s been consistent and he puts points on the board.”

The game was close throughout, though — Clymer led 36-32 midway through the fourth quarter — but an 8-1 Pirates’ run boosted their advantage to 44-33 with under a minute remaining and they were able to hold on for the victory.

“Defensively, I thought we were really good,” King said. “Up in Sherman, they hurt us, but we took care of that (this time). Boy, it would have been nice to make some free throws tonight. That was rough.”

Helping out White and Wassink for the Pirates were Blake Beckerink, who added 10 points, three assists and three steals; Kameron Einink, who had 4 points, four rebounds, five steals and three assists; and Elijah Mitchell, who pulled down nine boards.

Blake Ferranto led the Wildcats with 17 points and 14 rebounds; and Cal Cook added 11 points.

“If you can’t put the ball in the hole, it’s tough to win,” Emory said. “We just couldn’t find the hoop tonight. We had lots of open shots, we just couldn’t find the hoop and we missed a bunch of free throws.

“They packed it in a little more, basically to stop Ferranto from getting anything in the middle and then leaving the outside a little bit more open. We just couldn’t knock down a shot. We couldn’t get the game sped up enough to get easy shots, so we were playing station-to-station basketball, which is right up Clymer’s alley, and it was to our demise in the end.”

For Clymer, it’s on to another rival — Panama — in the semifinals on Monday.

“We’ve got a buzz-saw waiting in front of us,” King said, “but it’s good to get there.”
