ALBANY — Chautauqua Lake freshman Noli Paddock was the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Section VI Championships and her start to the first New York State Public High School Athletic Association girls wrestling state championships has been exactly that.
Paddock opened the 132-pound bracket at MVP Arena on Thursday morning with a 1:20 pin over No. 15 Melania Turano of Bay Shore-XI and then the No. 2 secured the Eagles a spot in the semifinals with a 13-1 technical fall over Josie Lamb of Canandaigua-V.
Paddock was the first of the 10 local girls wrestlers to punch a ticket to the semifinals, but she was not the last as Dunkirk’s Jaslieen Salgado worked her way up the 235-pound bracket. Salgado first pinned East Rochester’s-V Grace Bishop in a dominant first round, but it was her quarterfinal when she showed her might trailing 6-1 to rally back for a 2:42 pin over Naomi Gonzalez of Valley Stream North-VIII.
Paddock will square off in the semifinals with 3-seed Taylor Aiello of Town of Huntington-XI, while Salgado takes on top-seed Peyton Mullin of Dundee-V.
Three more local girls picked up first-round wins as 2-seed Kim Bauer of Silver Creek picked up a technical fall over Bellport’s-XI Miiko Foster 14-4. Unfortunately, Bauer was then relegated to the consolation bracket after suffering a quick pin by Nyack’s-I Emily Rodriguez at 0:40 while she was looking to roll Rodriguez for points and found herself on her back.

Bauer got right back to business in the wrestlebacks with a pin over Kyleigh Kershner of Bellport-XI at 1:38, her path to the podium in the consolation bracket picks up against Marissa Crofoot of Fulton-III.
Fredonia eighth-grader McKella Hodkin picked up prequarterfinal pin over Gianni King of Middletown-IX at 1:53, but she lost her Section VI 145-pound final rematch to Frontier’s Avery White by another 10-0 technical fall.
Hodkin continues to fight for podium position in the wrestlebacks after securing a pin against Ja’Niyah Simmons of Canandaigua-V at 5:20 and is slated to battle Gabriella Schectman of MacArthur-VIII.
152-pound No. 2 Lilly Hyde of Panama found herself in trouble during her first match when No. 15 Melina Georgas of Suffern-I held a 12-8 lead in the final 15 seconds, but Hyde was able to dig deep and pull out a pin with 4 seconds left and a spot in the quarterfinals.
The Panama freshman was unable to find that magic again when she wrestled No. 10 Kiara Richard of Shaker-II who grinded out a 9-0 decision. Her season then came to an end in the wrestlebacks as she could not erase a 4-0 deficit to Keishara Tulloch of Uniondale-VIII, falling 4-2.

The remaining five girls lost their opening bouts, but didn’t plan on leaving Albany without a victory.
At 94 pounds, Cassadaga Valley’s Anastazia Hale lost her opening match against Olivia Anello of Bellport-XI via pin, but rallied back with a technical fall over Kolbie Furman of Minisink Valley-IX 10-0 and then a pin over Madeline Palulis of Salem-Cambridge-II at 2:14.
Chautauqua Lake’s Kassidy Benedetto first loss to Palulis, but then managed a pin over Uniondale’s-VIII Giselle Espinoza. Benedetto’s tournament ended the following match with a pin by Anello.
Hale still has a path to third-place with a looming match against Tatiana Alexander of Eastchester-I.
Chautauqua Lake’s Kortlyn Fairbank was pinned by Fairport’s-V Brooke Agnone to begin her day at 100 pounds, but responded with a 10-0 technical fall over Genesis Garcia of White Plains-I. Fairbank’s season ended with a pin by Alianna Lyon of Mechanicville/Stillwater-II at 0:58.

While Hyde began with a win at 152 pounds, Gowanda’s Kiernan Quinn was pinned in her first match by Gabriella Gonzales of Phoenix-III. Quinn picked up her first win against Asana Barham of Monroe-Woodbury-IX by pinfall at 1:04 and then pinned Kiara Davidson of Johnson City-IV even faster at 0:41. Quinn has a chance at the podium and even third place and that road continues through Keishara Tulloch of Uniondale-VIII.
