CHEEKTOWAGA — Jamestown had just four girls on its bowling team this season and was not able to compete in the Section VI Class A championships as a squad.
But one member of the Red & Green sure left her mark at AMF Airport Lanes on Monday.
Junior Addison Cappalino turned in a memorable performance to finish in first place and qualify for the state championships.
Cappalino tossed a morning series of 243-208-204 and followed that up in the afternoon with a 213-211-204 to finish with a total of 1,283. Her performance beat Kenmore’s Cailyn Willard by 36 pins and earned her a spot at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships Friday, March 14 through Sunday, March 16 at AMF Syracuse Lanes.
Cappalino follows 2024 Jamestown graduate Abbie Derby, who qualified for the state championships the past two seasons and now attends Niagara University.
Willard tied for second with a 208-192-228-218-187-214-1,247. Frontier’s Madison Ciminelli rolled a 197-181-226-245-206-192-1,247. Amherst’s Wynter Winkfield had the fourth-highest series with a 140-222-203-255-211-214-1,245, followed by Lancaster’s Danica Horbett (229-180-203-225-192-204-1,233), Clarence’s Sarah Zulick (198-191-245-225-182-192-1,233) and West Seneca’s Cali Racsumberger (222-225-174-223-158-225-1,227).
Frontier won the Division 1 championship with a team linescore of 931-877-949-1,017-945-916-5,635, 160 pins better than Clarence’s 840-906-901-944-915-969-5,475.
Frontier, including Ciminelli, will head to the state championships as a team and the other six girls will be Section VI’s Division 1 representatives.
In addition to the Division 1 title, Frontier earned the Class A championship. North Tonawanda won the Class B title with a linescore of 952-918-837-886-914-861-5,368.
Jamestown sophomore Jamie Beaver also competed as an individual and finished 40th overall with a 145-136-192-147-184-190-994.
The Division 2 girls teams will compete today in Cheektowaga, followed by Division 1 boys Wednesday and Division 2 boys Thursday.
