The Jamestown Community College sophomores showed out on their night with a resounding 95-41 win over rival Erie Community College in a Western New York Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at the Physical Education Complex.
The Jayhawks (15-3, 3-0) scored the first 11 points of the game, six of those coming from sophomore Kaleigha Plett, who finished with a season-high 25.
Jamestown CC made it 19-4 a little later as another sophomore, Jennica Berens — who scored 17 and recorded a triple-double with 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
The Jayhawks kept pouring it on in the second quarter; freshman Alyson Canfield, who led all scorers with 29, splashed one of her seven 3-pointers to make it 35-16.
Late buckets from Plett, Berens and fellow sophomore Courtney Martin saw the home crowd in a frenzy as Jamestown CC entered the break up 49-20.
Another Canfield trey early in the third ballooned the advantage to 31. She kept up the hot shooting in the fourth quarter, where yet another 3-pointer made it a 40-point lead. It was a special night for the Jamestown High School product, who was shooting lights out with her former teammates in the crowd.
The Jayhawks hit the road next when they visit SUNY Niagara at 1 p.m. Saturday.
MEN
JAYHAWKS FALL
The Jamestown Community College men came out on fire on Sophomore Night, but couldn’t hold and fell to Erie CC 111-90 in a Western New York Athletic Conference game.
The Jayhawks opened the game on a torrid pace, connecting on seven of 13 first-half 3-pointers.
A triple from Federico Foddai, who finished with 13 points, at the 10:42 mark put JCC up 28-14, and the biggest crowd of the season was on its feet.
The Kats quickly cut that deficit to 34-30 at 5:44 of the first half. David Stroud did most of the damage when Jayhawks head coach Xavier Churnac called a timeout.
The Jayhawks were able to go back up five with a layup from Foddai, but the home team only took a one-point lead into halftime.
The second half started much like the first ended, with Jamestown CC on its heels. A Joey Valerio transition bucket stopped the bleeding, but Jamestown was down nine. The Ohioan finished the game with 13.
Jamestown CC was able to claw back within 12 points late, thanks to fast-break buckets from Marcus Wynter, who led the Jayhawks (4-21, 0-4) with 17.
The Jayhawks travel to SUNY Niagara on Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip.
