7 Area Wrestlers Clinch Spot In State Quarterfinals

Southwestern's Adrian Torres records his 100th win to earn a spot in the 101-pound quarterfinals.
ALBANY — It was already special for Southwestern junior Adrian Torres to make the trip to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Division II wrestling championships at MVP Arena in Albany.
What made Friday morning a little more special for the 3-seed in the 101-pound bracket was him securing his 100th victory in the prequarterfinals with a dominant technical fall 18-3 over Gabe McDonald of Northern Adirondack-VII in the second round. Torres needs just one more win to punch his spot into the semifinals on Saturday morning.
In order to get into the matches for the podium, Torres will have to defeat No. 6 Nahjeed Abel of General Brown-III in the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon.
Southwestern teammate and fellow junior Carmine Calimeri earned the Trojans another spot in the quarterfinals as he picked up an 18-9 major decision over No. 10 Wyatt Rock of Duanesburg/Schoharie-II. The 7-seeded Calimeri will now have to get through No. 2 Brock Frederick of South Jefferson-III for a spot in the semis on Saturday.
The Section VI champion at 124 pounds, Falconer/Cassadaga Valley sophomore Dylan Newman, had a little easier time than Calimeri in his prequarterfinal as he did not surrender a point en route to a 9-0 lead and second-round pin over No. 22 Luke Gillis of Hoosick Falls-II at 3:31. No. 6 Newman’s shot at the semifinals will go through No. 3 Trevor Middendorf of Newark Valley-IV.

Another pair of teammates reached the quarterfinals as Randolph seniors Caden Inkley and Domanik Clark began the day with victories.
In his return trip to the state championships Inkley reassured everyone he belongs and should be in discussion for a podium spot. Wrestling at 152 pounds, No. 4 Inkley made very quick work of his first opponent with a pin over No. 20 Brody Heckman of Alexander-V at 1:41.
If he wants to get to the semifinals for the first time he will need to defeat No. 5 Henry Martin of Croton/Harmon-I.
Clark wrestled a familiar face in Lackawanna’s Abdulhamid Albaneh in a rematch of the 138-pound Section VI championship and he posted another narrow decision of 4-1. His road will not be easy into the semifinals as he will have to upset the No. 12 132-pounder in the nation, top-seeded Gavin Mangano of Shoreham/Wading River-XI.
Falconer/Cassadaga Valley sent two sophomores to the quarterfinals as Patrick Braley matched Newman’s pin with one of his own at 190 pounds. Braley dominated his opponent No. 12 Matthew Wengatz of Port Jefferson-XI and ultimately clinched his position in the second round at 4:00. He will take on No. 4 Yanni Drapaniotis of Unatego/Unadilla Valley/Franklin for a spot in the semifinals.

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley sophomore Patrick Braley secured a second-round pin to advance to the 190-pound quarterfinals.
With very little surprise, Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer senior Mason Maring wrapped up the prequarterfinal victories as he took down No. 18 Jake Lesage of Cobleskill/Richmondville-II in quick order with a pin in just over a minute. If the 2-seeded Maring wants to reach the semifinals again he will need a victory over Jim Biccum of South Jefferson-III in the 285-pound prequarterfinals.
After first-round victories, both Jamestown’s Tyler Zwald and Chautauqua Lake’s Thandon Bensink were pitted against the top seeds at 131 pounds in Division I and II, respectively.
That made a tall task for the duo and in Zwald’s bout he battled a solid first round against two-time state champion Luke Satriano of Valley Central-IX, but he could not keep it going much longer than a round. After giving up just three points in the first period, Satriano scored 17 points to claim a technical fall 20-2.
Bensink suffered the same fate as he tussled with Chris Noto of Honeoye Falls/Lima-V being relegated into the consolation bracket after a second-round technical fall 16-0.
