Westfield Set For Back-To-Back Games Against Ranked Teams
Once again the Randolph and Westfield boys basketball teams are the top two teams in Class C as voted by the New York State Sportswriters Association.
That sets the table for one of the best games of the year.
No. 1 Randolph (12-1) will travel to No. 2 Westfield (13-1) this Saturday for a rematch of last year’s sectional final which the Cardinals won. However, that’s not Westfield’s only tough test this week as they host Panama (10-2), the No. 2 team in Class D, tonight at 7:30 p.m. for the driver’s seat toward another league title.
While the top of Class C is owned by Section VI, those are the only two programs in the top-25 rankings. Gowanda (10-5) has bounced back to honorable mention with Chautauqua Lake (8-7) and Holland (9-6).
Forestville joins Panama in the Class D rankings at No. 14, but since cracking into the fold the Hornets (9-3) have lost consecutive games, while Clymer (7-6) resides as an honorable mention.
Making the big move this week are the Salamanca Warriors (11-1) going from No. 7 all the way to No. 3 in Class B, right behind Section V’s World of Inquiry at No. 1 and Section I’s Woodlands at No. 2.
Allegany-Limestone (8-4) remains at No. 11 with Akron (12-1) directly below them and Eden (9-2) at No. 15. The honorable mentions are Falconer (8-8), Fredonia (8-6) and Wilson (11-4).
Jamestown (12-1) continues to add wins in Class AAA, but saw no movement from No. 19, while Niagara Falls (8-5) jumped one to No. 22 and remaining at the top of the class is Archbishop Stepinac (16-3) of the Catholic High Schools.
Albany Academy (14-2) of the Associated Independent Schools remains No. 1 in Class AA, while locally St. Joe’s (12-3) of the CHS is No. 3, Bishop Timon (12-3) of CHS is No. 9, Canisius (14-3) of CHS is No. 9, Health Sciences (8-3) is No. 14, Lockport (9-4) at No. 20 and honorable mentions are Nichols (8-7) and Orchard Park (9-2).
Undefeated Glens Falls (16-0) of Section II still holds the top spot in Class A, while Section VI’s Grand Island (12-1) is No. 9, Amherst (11-3) is No. 16, Williamsville South (10-4) is No. 20 and honorable mentions are Cheektowaga (10-2) and Iroquois (10-2).
GIRLS
Just as the Randolph boys are the top local team ranked, the Cardinals boast the top girls spot as the No. 3 team in Class C. Then, flipping right behind Randolph (9-4) are the rival Frewsburg Bears (12-2) at No. 4. Tough losses to both of those schools has bumped Cassadaga Valley (10-3) back to No. 14 and Maple Grove (12-2) jumps up one to No. 18.
Section II’s Greenwich (16-0) still remains undefeated and at No. 1 in Class C and Section V’s Keshequa (13-1) is the buffer at No. 2 with the Cardinals and Bears looming.
Sherman (14-1) continues winning and remains the No. 4 team in Class D, while Pine Valley (8-3) dropped back a pair of spots to No. 12 and Section V’s Elba (12-0) holds onto No. 1.
A loss to Sherman has dropped Southwestern (12-2) from No. 10 to No. 17 in the Class B rankings, but the Trojans still remain the top team in the section with Newfane (10-4) at No. 23 and Salamanca (8-5) at No. 24. The top of the class is still controlled by Section III’s Bishop Grimes (13-2).
Class A is still led by Dalton (16-0) of the AIS. Section VI’s Williamsville South (8-5) is No. 26 and Iroquois (9-3) is No. 30.
Class AA also has the same leader with Section V’s Hilton (12-0), while Lancaster St. Mary’s (13-7) is No. 10, North Tonawanda (11-1) is No. 11, Starpoint (9-6) is No. 18, West Seneca West (12-2) is No. 19, Nichols (9-6) is No. 29 and Orchard Park (12-3) is No. 30.
Rounding it out for the girls still in the top spot for Class AAA is Christ the King (13-5), while Cardinal O’Hara (11-7) is No. 23 and Lancaster (11-3) jumps up to No. 24.
