Bears Remain No. 1 In Class C NYSSWA Rankings, Randolph Is 4
The Frewsburg girls basketball team started the season at the top of the New York State Sportswriters Association Class C rankings and in the second week the Bears have only continued to establish themselves at the top.
In Frewsburg’s holiday tournament the Bears dominated the competition which was well above their class size. Frewsburg first dominated Lockport from Class AA 95-24 and then the Bears rolled Warren (Pa.) 70-28.
Frewsburg is still in search of an opponent to present a challenge and it seeks one in Cathedral Prep (Pa.) this Saturday. Just like the Bears, Cathedral Prep made it to the state tournament last year, but fell short in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association 5A championship game.
While the Bears are yet to be challenged in Section VI, there are several other Class C representatives in the rankings with Randolph (3-3) at No. 4, Cassadaga Valley (3-1) at No. 11 and Maple Grove (6-1) at No. 16.
Randolph has loaded up its schedule with tough competition and the losses have come from Cardinal O’Hara ranked No. 22 in Class AAA, Hornell which is No. 1 in Class B and Saint Marys of Lancaster at No. 9 in Class AA. Prior to its loss to Saint Marys of Lancaster, Randolph knocked off the No. 17 team in Class A, Johnson City of Section IV 65-49 at the Elmira Tournament.
Cassadaga Valley also jumped up a spot with three straight wins since losing to Frewsburg, defeating Maple Grove 44-32, Panama 72-50 and Sherman 73-55. Maple Grove’s only loss comes to Cassadaga Valley, but it maintains its position in the rankings with the same record since the previous week.
Sherman has continued its strong start to the season and moved up another spot in Class D to No. 3 while posting a dominant 54-16 victory against Fredonia. The Wildcats dropped their only game of the season this past Saturday against Cassadaga Valley.
Pine Valley shares the final spot of the Class D rankings with Section X’s Chateaugay at No. 20. The Panthers are 3-1 and have not played since the first release of the rankings.
Elba of Section V is currently ranked No. 1 in Class D with a 4-0 record.
In Class B, Southwestern has transitioned from Reece Beaver to another star in the making in seventh-grader Gianna Sirianni who is already averaging 17.8 points per game and has the Trojans ranked No. 15 with a 4-1 record.
Salamanca (3-2) shares the final spot in the rankings with another Section VI team in Akron (6-2).
In Class A, Dalton of AIS holds the top spot with a 9-0 record, while Iroquois (5-1) is the only Section VI team in the rankings at No. 11.
Section V’s Hilton (5-0) is the top team in Class AA, while North Tonawanda (5-1) at No. 10, West Seneca West (6-0) at No. 16, Orchard Park (6-2) and Starpoint (2-2) at No. 25 represent Section VI in the rankings.
Christ the King of the Catholic High School Athletic Association sits atop Class AAA, while the highest local school is Cardinal O’Hara of the Monsignor Martin Association at No. 22.
