SOUTH DAYTON — From the looks of it, even Jake Anders couldn’t believe the shots he was knocking down in the second half Thursday evening.

The Forestville sophomore scored all of his game-high 22 points, including six 3-pointers, in the final two quarters as the Hornets turned a two-point halftime advantage into a 30-point blowout, 75-45, over Pine Valley in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 4 boys basketball.

Fellow sophomore William Duliba added 20 points for undefeated Forestville (8-0, 5-0), which features no seniors, and was ranked No. 9 in Class D by the New York State Sportswriters Association in this week’s rankings.

“We’re young. … They can play very well. Sometimes, they just have to settle down,” Forestville head coach Ralph Jackson said. “When they settle down and start playing the way I know they can play, good things can happen for us.”

Junior Camryn Slade scored a team-high 16 points for the Panthers, who fell to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the league.

Pine Valley was a worthy opponent for the Hornets early, leading by 10 at the end of the first quarter after a 3-pointer from Slade in the final minute.

“I loved the first half. What I keep harping on with the boys is to keep growing as individual players and as a team unit,” Pine Valley head coach Bobby Slisz said. “They showed in the first half who they are going to be. … They are inexperienced, but they are growing rapidly.”

But foul trouble to James Greene began to catch up to the Panthers midway through the second quarter. As soon the 6-foot-5 sophomore left the game with his third foul with 2:42 remaining in the first half, Forestville took advantage.

“You don’t understand how hot it is until you lose your shade tree,” Slisz said. “When you have a guy like that who can protect the hoop, the defense changes.” Slisz said.

Hornets junior Jack Spengler scored on a putback and was fouled, and when Forestville grabbed the offensive rebound on the missed free throw, Spengler was the beneficiary again with another bucket. Duliba followed with a 3-pointer on the Hornets’ next possession to tie the game at 23-all with 1:52 left in the second quarter.

“Jimmy is big and he’s physical. We needed to know where he was and we had to box him out,” Jackson said. “We also wanted to take it at him and try to get him out of the game … he affects a lot of shots.”

Spengler finished an 8-point second quarter with Forestville’s final two baskets of the half to make it 27-25 at the break. All four of his buckets came after Greene left the game.

“You might get one foul that you don’t think you deserve, but you can take care of the other two or three,” Slisz said. ” … He’s a young player, learning the lesson. … We are learning those lessons as we go.”

The second half was all Hornets. Anders hit three 3-pointers and Duliba added another during a 20-14 third quarter that gave Forestville a 47-39 lead entering the final eight minutes.

“Jake had zero points in the first half and he was frustrated. He stayed with it,” Jackson said. ” … He fought through it.”

It only got worse from there for the Panthers, who turned the ball over eight times leading to 15 points for the Hornets in the fourth quarter. Forestville went 11 of 15 from the field, including 5 of 8 from beyond the 3-point arc to end the game with a 28-6 burst.

“I always tell my team that we control the outcome of games,” Slisz said. “It doesn’t matter what the other team does, part of the responsibility as a defense is we allowed those shots to be taken.”

Pine Valley will visit nonleague Sherman on Saturday afternoon before returning to league play Monday at West Valley. Also Monday, Forestville will face its biggest test of the season to date when it closes its first trip through league play with a first-place showdown at Franklinville (8-3, 4-0).

“They definitely have confidence, they do not lack that,” Jackson said of his team. “We are a team that can compete with almost anybody that we play against.”

NOTES: Spengler and Waterman both had double-doubles for the Hornets with 10 points and 13 rebounds apiece. Dom Anders had eight rebounds; Manny Sanchez had seven assists and five rebounds; and Jake Anders had five steals and four assists for Forestville, which shot 31 of 76 (40.8%) from the field, including 12 of 27 (44.4%) from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 18 times. … Pine Valley shot 18 of 59 (30.5%) from the field, including 4 of 18 (22.2%) from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 20 times.
