JHS Opens League Play With Win; Randolph Claims Tully Title
CLARENCE — The Jamestown boys basketball team survived a sluggish performance Saturday afternoon, downing Clarence 45-34 in its Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 opener.
Jaydian Johnson led the way with 22 points, 13 rebounds and five steals, and Dom Gonzalez chipped in 13 points and four assists as the cold-shooting Red & Green (5-1, 1-0), claimed its fourth straight win.
But it wasn’t a thing of beauty.
In fact, Jamestown, which led 7-0 to start the game, managed just 13 points the rest of the first half and took a 20-16 advantage into the break.
The Red & Green opened the third quarter on a 9-2 run, courtesy of a 3-pointer from the corner by Gonzalez and three field goals by Johnson. Armed with a 29-18 lead, Jamestown didn’t allow Clarence to get closer than nine points the rest of the way.
All told, the Red & Green shot just 17 of 49 from the floor, including 3 of 19 from the arc. Jamestown did hold a huge advantage on the boards, grabbing 41 rebounds compared to 23 by the Red Devils. Elijah Farmer joined Johnson in double figures in that department with 11. Farmer also dished out five assists.
Nobody had more than 9 points for Clarence (3-5, 0-1), which connected on just 12 of 46 attempts from the field and 8 of 11 from the foul line.
Jamestown will be back in action Tuesday when it travels to Williamsville North, its sixth straight road game. After playing at Orchard Park this Saturday, the Red & Green will finally return home on Jan. 13 when it will entertain Lancaster.
NOTES: In the junior varsity game, Jamestown held off Clarence 61-58. Leading the way for the Red & Green was Jhensen Hernandez with 21 points. Julian Jackson and Hector Montanez both added 11.
