JCC Women Claim WNYAC Swim Crown

BATAVIA — The Jamestown Community College women’s swimming and diving team wrapped up the 2024-25 league schedule with another win at Genesee Community College, finishing the year a perfect 9-0 in league, and with another Western New York Athletic Conference championship on their resume.

Jamestown CC’s men weren’t far behind, earning a second place at Genesee and a runner-up spot in the WNYAC.

“It has been another great season with both the men’s and women’s teams. I really like the progress that we have made throughout the season, as we have one meet left with Fredonia State and then focus on the regional meet,” said a proud head coach Todd Conklin.

The ladies went 3-0 at Genesee CC with Ashylnn Swan leading the way in the diving well. She earned another top spot, this time breaking her own school record with a 259.72.

Swan wasn’t alone in the impressive performances. Anna Jones and Sophia Gervasio earned first and second in the grueling 1,650-yard freestyle.

Jamestown CC took the top three spots in the 200-yard freestyle, with Emily Swan earning gold, Desiree Putt silver, and Jalyn Linton bronze.

Ashlynn Swan wasn’t limited to diving, taking second in the 50-yard freestyle.

It was an all-Jayhawks photo finish in the 100-yard butterfly with Linton and Jones tying at a 1:14:03 mark.

Jamestown CC’s women also brought home the top two spots in the 100-yard individual medley, with freshman Andison Lawson topping fellow freshman Linton for the win.

“On the women’s side, Ashlynn Swan led the way with a new six-dive record on 1 meter, but the whole women’s team is improving every meet, and I know that our training will get us to where we need to be for regionals. As coaches, we are positive about what we are seeing,” added Conklin.

The men finished just 19 points behind Monroe CC and helped Jamestown CC win the overall crown.

Starting in the 50-yard freestyle, Kyle Dean edged out teammate Cameron Milewski by a second for a top-two finish.

Jamestown CC’s 200-yard medley relay team outswam the competition as the team of Dean, Zach Johnson, Christian Merrill and Milewski took first.

Owen Slojkowski dove into the distance swim and placed third in the 1,650-yard freestyle.

Flipping to the 100-yard butterfly, Noah Miles was Jamestown’s best performer, bringing home a third just a few seconds off the top spot.

In the 100-yard backstroke, Merrill and Slojkowski grabbed another one-two showing for the Jayhawks.

Then it was South African Zach Johnson, pacing the field in the 100-yard individual medley for another Jayhawk perched at the top of the podium.

Lastly, it was another record falling in the diving well for the men, with Milewski scoring a 247.20 to put his name atop the record books.

“On the men’s side, Cameron (Mileswki) also set a new 1-meter, six-dive record. Along with Cam, Kyle Dean and Zach Zohnson are not only improving but are also leading the way. Overall, the men’s team has had the best showing over the past few years, and we have high expectations for what they will do at the regional meet,” mentioned Conklin.

The regional meet takes place at Erie CC from Friday, Feb. 14 to Sunday, Feb. 16.

“It takes a whole team, and this team really is growing in the right direction. We are getting positive momentum going into the championship season. I have no doubt that both teams will be up to the challenge, and I truly expect great results,” said Conklin.

The championship season concludes back at Erie CC in early March with nationals.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Jamestown Community College men’s basketball team fought to the end against 15th-ranked SUNY Niagara, but fell 85-73 at home Wednesday night.

Jamestown CC took its first lead of the contest at the 15:21 mark, going up 9-8 on a 3-pointer from Travis Castro, who scored 7.

The tight battle lasted through the first 10 minutes, with Jamestown CC taking another one-point lead, 25-24, from a 3-pointer by Federico Foddai, who also scored 7 points and added nine rebounds.

Niagara started to build a lead after that, scoring 10 of the next 12 points, mostly from guard Reggie Smith Jr., who led all scorers with 20.

The Jayhawks would go to the half trailing by 15 at 48-33.

Jamestown CC’s deficit swelled to 25 early in the second half before a Tamir Barrant rebound and transition layup stopped the bleeding. The freshman finished with a team-high 18.

Marcus Wynter, who also scored 18, would put up five straight to start a run for Jamestown CC.

The Jayhawks would draw within 76-64 with just under five minutes to play on another bucket from Barrant.

The margin hovered around 10 to 12 for the rest of the contest, with Jamestown CC ultimately falling by 12.

The loss knocks Jamestown down to 0-2 in league play and 4-18 overall.

They hit the road for a nonleague game at CC of Beaver County today at 7 p.m.
