Jayhawks Dive Back Into Competition With Invite Win
Jamestown Community College’s swimming and diving teams returned from break with a splash Saturday.
The ladies team won the Jamestown Invite, while the men finished second. As a team, Jamestown CC brought home first overall.
“Overall it was a great meet for us,” said Jamestown CC head coach Todd Conklin. “I think we all know we can do better, but after a long winter break, it was good to get back into competitive mode. We now know where our training is and what we need to do and focus on as we head into the stretch run.”
Starting with the ladies, Desiree Putt continued her fantastic freshman season by winning the 50-yard backstroke by over 6 seconds, the 200-yard backstroke, the 200-yard individual medley and the 400-yard freestyle relay, while helping the Jayhawks finish second in the 400-yard medley relay.
Emily Swan brought home three wins, including the 200-yard freestyle, which she won by almost 6 seconds, the 100-yard freestyle and the 400-yard freestyle relay. She joined Putt in second on the 400-yard medley relay and was second in the 50-yard freestyle.
Not to be outdone, Anna Jones also claimed three firsts. She claimed the top spot in the 1,000-yard freestyle, dropping almost 3 seconds from her best time, 50-yard butterfly and 400-yard freestyle relay. She was also second in the 400-yard medley relay and 100-yard individual medley.
Haleigha Hardy earned a first in the 200-yard breaststroke while claiming second in the 400-yard medley relay, 50-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual relay. She also took fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Teammate Addison Lawson earned a pair of wins in the 400-yard medley relay and 500-yard freestyle. She was also second in the 1,000-yard freestyle and fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Freshman Sophia Gervasio was part of the 400-yard medley relay win. She also brought home a second in the 200-yard backstroke, thirds in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 50-yard backstroke, and fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Jalyn Linton was part of the winning teams in the 400-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. Individually, she was second in the 50-yard freestyle, third in the 100-yard individual medley, and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle.
Lastly, Ashlynn Swan continued her dominance in the diving well by winning the 1-meter dive by almost 30 points. She was also part of the 400-yard medley relay winning team. The sophomore also finished fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
On the men’s side, Kyle Dean bagged four first-place finishes, including the 50-yard backstroke winning by just over 4 seconds, 50-yard freestyle by less than two-tenths of a second, 200-yard backstroke and 400-yard freestyle relay. He was also part of the 400-yard medley relay team that captured second.
South African Zach Johnson earned a pair of wins and three second-place finishes. He won the 50-yard breaststroke by edging out his opponent by just under a second, and 200-yard breaststroke. The seconds came in the 400-yard medley relay, 100-yard individual medley and 400-yard freestyle relay.
Newcomer Christian Merrill had a trio of seconds and a pair of thirds. The second-place finishes were in the 400-yard backstroke, 400-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley relay. His thirds were for the 50-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual medley.
In the diving waters, Cameron Milewski flipped, spun and twisted to a second-place point total. He also finished second in the 400-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. He won the 50-yard butterfly.
Owen Slojkowski claimed second in the 500-yard freestyle, third in the 1,000-yard freestyle, and fifth in both the 400-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay.
Baseball player-turned-swimmer Kyle Camp was part of both the fifth-place-finishing 400-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.
Noah Mile captured second in the 200-yard freestyle and was also part of the fifth-place finishing 400-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.
Rounding out the fifth-place finishing 400-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams was sophomore Randall Hall.
“Next our focus will be on the last WYNAC meet on Wednesday, where we will try and wrap up another league title; then we will put all of our focus on the regional championships and nationals,” Conklin said. “It starts daily with great attitudes and phenomenal practices, and we have the swimmers to finish strong.”
It’s a quick turnaround for the Jayhawks, who are back in the water on Wednesday at 6 p.m. for the Genesee conference meet.
