Jamestown Makes It Look Easy Vs. Orchard Park
In the closing moments of the third quarter in Saturday’s Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 basketball game, Jamestown was working for the last shot.
As the clock wound down, the play design was just as Coach Billy Miley had drawn it up.
Pass.
Pass.
Pass.
Pass yet again.
In fact, it seemed like all five players touched the ball at least once before a field goal was attempted.
When it finally was? Well, the Red & Green missed the layup with five seconds remaining.
As it turned out, however, it was one of the few times all afternoon Miley’s crew failed to execute to perfection.
Sparked by 24 points from senior Jaydian Johnson, 22 from junior Elijah Farmer and 21 from junior Dom Gonzalez, Jamestown played about as well as it can for most of the game en route to a 75-56 victory over Orchard Park in a contest at McElrath Gymnasium that wasn’t even that close.
The win improved the Red & Green’s record to 10-1 overall and 5-0 in the league, while the Quakers fell to 8-2 and 4-2 after suffering their second loss in two weeks to their rivals from the Southern Tier.
“I think it’s the best we’ve played so far,” Miley said. ” … We moved the ball well, shot it well and we were getting stops. We were kind of checking all the boxes, and it was nice to see that.”
How good was Jamestown, which is ranked 19th in this week’s New York State Sportswriters Association Class AAA poll?
During a 10-minute span from late in the first period to the halftime horn, the Red & Green went on a 34-6 run, transforming a 14-11 lead into a 47-17 advantage at the break.
Drives to the basket? Check.
Putbacks? Check.
Steals turned into layups? Check.
It was high school basketball at its finest, which was reflected in Jamestown’s gaudy 58% (21 of 36) first-half shooting.
“I thought we were really good defensively in the first half,” Miley said. ” … We’re so much better when we get stops, which leads to easier baskets. … I thought we were extremely unselfish in getting really decent shots for each other.”
After intermission, Orchard Park, which is listed under honorable mention in the state Class AA rankings, cut into the lead somewhat, but there was little doubt about the outcome.
The Quakers were led by Carter Switek with 15 points, 13 in the second half; and Zach Nalawadi with 10, but they didn’t have an answer for the Red & Green’s trio of Jaydian Johnson, Farmer and Gonzalez, who combined to shoot a nifty 29 of 51 from the floor.
That stat was only part of their story.
Gonzalez also collected nine steals; Jaydian Johnson had seven rebounds, four assists and four steals; and Farmer pulled down 13 rebounds.
“All three of those guys would be the focal point of any team, pretty much,” Miley said. “They do a lot of good things together … and the other guys are contributing in other ways.”
NOTES: Switek also had six steals, four rebounds and four assists; and Max Mancabelli chipped in 8 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal. … In the first meeting on Jan. 11, Jamestown prevailed at Orchard Park 77-56. … Jamestown returns to action tonight when it entertains Williamsville North. Varsity tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. It also has a home game Wednesday afternoon when it will play host to Lancaster (1:30 p.m. varsity tip) and, on Friday, it will travel to meet St. Joe’s as part of the CenterCourt Classic (7:45 p.m. start). … In the junior varsity game Saturday, Jamestown fell to the Quakers 56-55 to drop to 7-3 on the season. Leading the way for the Red & Green were Jensen Hernandez with 15 points and Julian Jackson with 12.
