Frewsburg Meets Its Match In Cathedral Prep
FREWSBURG — The scoreboard mounted on the wall read: GUEST 52, BEARS 40, but Frewsburg head coach Sierra Beaver wasn’t the least bit down in the dumps after the final horn sounded Saturday night.
Not a bit.
Because even though her state top-ranked Class C girls basketball team suffered its first loss of the season to Cathedral Prep, Beaver acknowledged her figurative glass was half-full.
“We scheduled this game knowing their defense was going to be really good and they were going to pressure us like other teams haven’t yet,” Beaver said. “In the first half, our shooting percentage showed we weren’t ready for that kind of pressure.”
For the record, junior guard Natalie Spano scored a game-high 20 points; 6-foot-2 senior forward Addisyn Biel added 13; and the Ramblers limited the hosts to three first-half field goals to improve to 5-3.
Frewsburg (6-1), meanwhile, was paced by senior Teghan Trocki with 12 points (on four second-half 3-pointers); senior Ava Jimerson contributed 11; and sophomore Jadyn Trocki added 9. And had the Bears shot even close to what they normally do before the break, the large crowd could have been treated to a down-to-the-wire finish in the nonleague game.
As it was, Frewsburg, which trailed 29-11 at halftime and 38-19 late in the third quarter, narrowed the deficit to 47-40 following a layup by Ava Jimerson with 1:18 remaining. But Spano responded with a layup and a pair of free throws, and Jessica Beveridge added a charity toss to finally put the game out of reach for the private school from Erie, Pennsylvania.
“The second half was much better,” Beaver said. “Defensively, we still have some things we have to work on a little bit, and we let them get too many offensive rebounds, but I think we play hard, we play hard all the time and we never give up.
“In the second half, our shooting percentage improved a little bit. I’m really excited to go there and play them in a month and a half, so we can see that kind of pressure again.”
NOTES: Biel, who recently surpassed the 1,000-point career milestone, also grabbed nine rebounds; Spano had seven boards; and Seana Thrower collected 8 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals. … For Frewsburg, Jadyn Trocki had four rebounds and four assists; and Ava Jimerson grabbed five boards. … The Ramblers’ three losses have been to Charles Brush of Ohio, 77-44; Hillcrest, Alabama, 58-48; and Copper Hills, Utah, 41-36. The latter two losses were in the KSA Tournament in Orlando, Florida, in December. … The Bears travel to Cathedral Prep on Feb. 17.
