Ty Harper is out as the head coach of the Clymer/Sherman/Panama football team.

After 10 years and three New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class D championships, Harper told his players of his decision to step down at the team’s season-ending banquet Sunday afternoon at the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel in Celoron.

The move comes just over a month after the Wolfpack won their third state title, 46-7 over Section IX’s Burke Catholic at the JMA Dome on the campus of Syracuse University.

Harper coached a merged Clymer/Sherman team to a 1-7 record in 2014 before Panama joined the mix in 2015. As the only head coach the Clymer/Sherman/Panama program has ever known, Harper put together a record of 78-24, including state-championship seasons in 2018, 2019 and 2024. The undefeated 2018 season ended with a 26-6 victory over Moriah and the 2019 season ended with a 47-6 win, again over Moriah.

The Wolfpack has produced 18 New York State Sportswriters Association first-team all-state selections since 2017, including five Class D Players of the Year – Derek Ecklund (2018), Cameron Barmore and Gerrit Hinsdale (2019), and Tate Catanese and Bryce Hinsdale (2024).

With a stepdaughter away at college and three school-aged sons at home, Harper sounded like a tough decision may be coming after last month’s state title game.

“Any kid that’s ever played for me has had as much of an impact on me as I’ve hopefully had on them,” Harper said at the time. “I hope that whatever comes next for these young men, I hope they know how much I love them and care about them.

“More than anything, I’m so proud of all of the players that I’ve ever had the opportunity to coach in this program,” Harper added.

Now, C/S/P will have to look elsewhere for somebody to lead the program into the future. Whoever that is will have large shoes to fill.

“The last 10 years,” Harper said last month, “it’s been such an honor to be the head coach of this program.”
