Eagles Trim Golden Cougars To Put Another Title In Sight

MAYVILLE — Two years ago the Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer boys wrestling team unseated Falconer/Cassadaga Valley for the top spot in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division I.

For a long time, the Golden Cougars dominated the league, but on Thursday evening the Eagles had an opportunity to show they were there to stay with a three-peat on the line. Trailing 24-10 with six bouts to go, Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer rattled off four straight pins to jump ahead and ended with a technical fall from Thandon Bensink at 131 pounds to get in position to secure at least a share of the league title with a 39-28 victory.

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer prevailed with pins from Tayvier Wells at 170 pounds in 38 seconds, Mason Maring at 285 in 13 seconds, Chase Shirley at 101 in 52 seconds, Zander Lombardo at 108 in 2:52 and Chris Bowen at 116 in 3:24. Jordin Eddy also picked up a decision at 138 and Bensink secured a 15-0 technical fall.

The Golden Cougars (4-1) established their lead with three pins coming from Brayden McCarthy at 145 in 5:18, Patrick Braley at 190 in 59 seconds and Javante Hackett at 215 in 3:08. Falconer/Cassadaga Valley also secured wins from Charlie Reichenbach at 152, Rylee Best at 160, and Dylan Newman posted a major decision at 124.

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer (4-0) will have a chance to officially claim a share of the league title at Southwestern next week and can attempt to go undefeated for the third straight year the following week at Portville.

Williamsville North (1-5) picked up wins by pin from Drew Fletch at 190 and Parker Brenon at 101, while both Aaron Connolly at 152 and Brayden Kellison at 131 posted technical fall results.
