Curling Leagues
Week 1 of the Northwest Arena Winter Backyard Curling Leagues kicked off the new year in fashion, with all 80 teams competing.
BUDLIGHT Monday 5:45 League
Shoeless Joe’s Pub with the early head start in 2025 thanks to Theresa Jackson and Rich Tyger. They finished off The Rolling Stones (39-30) and Cold as Ice (41-28). Bud Welker and Ba Na Ma Na put the league on notice with a pair of close calls against Had a Few (35-26) and The Jimmy Shimmy’s (35-32). Tobin Disbro and Stones 2.0 followed suit in the first go-around. They escaped Sloppy Penguins (24-21) as well as The Jimmy Shimmy’s (38-37). Meanwhile, Cold as Ice split the night after Bill Everson pulled them out of a shootout with Fruit of the Brooms (44-40). The main offense in the league came from Kevin Anderson, who carried TRCurlers in a blowout over Curling Me Softly (56-30). Greg Fye calmed things down the next time out as Curling Me Softly would advance by War Vets (34-30). Bill Breen and War Vets responded with a beat down of Gren’s Growlers (33-13). Annelise Haight wasted no time showing off her curling skillset in Sloppy Penguins’ nail biter versus The Rolling Stones (42-41). Brenda Numella and Had a Few rounded the night out with an easy double up of TRCurlers (26-13).
BUDLIGHT Monday 6:45 League
Eric Anderson and Jamie Sharpe got Ice Holes off to a strong start. They clocked out of their shift with two wins against Rowers on Ice (44-32) and Lakeshore East (30-12). Doug and Susan Justham led Frosty Curlers to the other perfect outing by taking down Stark Gravel (39-34) and Rowers on Ice (23-9). Amit Tameja put Cheese Curls in the conversation for early contenders after finishing off Pickle Pushers (38-25). Dennis Palermo and Stark Gravel utilized a late surge to defeat Sour Pickles (31-26). Katie Stronz showed no mercy in the second slate; her Sour Pickles would ambush Sip n’ Sliders (45-25). Dan Bowman and Tree Huggers hit the win column after toppling Rock Slide (31-24). Elsewhere, Aidan Melquist and Don Liden made Lakeshore East proud by knocking off Pickle Pushers (25-17). The night ended with a photo finish on house one. This is where Steve Hammond and Sip n’ Sliders would notch a wire-to-wire matchup with Tree Huggers (32-31).
Steve Chambers / Jamestown Honda Wednesday 5:30 League
The firepower that Legion Broom possessed this week was off the charts. Mike Dietrich and Todd Frangione looked unstoppable in their victories over We’ve Got the Stones (50-34) and J-1 Auto (49-26). Sarah Pillitteri was the main catalyst for Slone Melhuish. She ensured a pair of wins against Curling Me Softly (43-34) and Drunken Sliders (42-33). Head for the Mountains cruised by Drunken Sliders (36-26) and 12 Ounce Curls (45-35) behind Jim Cama. Bill and Karen Mott led In-Laws-Rock to a perfect start by stonewalling Girls with Stones (28-24) and Knuckle Draggers (52-43). We Love Beer capped off the undefeated teams thanks to Justin Kell and Laura Ahl. It wasn’t easy, they had some close shaves with J-1 Auto (50-44) and Curl Jam (30-29). Bob Drake captained Knuckle Draggers past Stone Cold Maidens (51-37). Jeff Housler and 12 Ounce Curls wrote off We’ve Got the Stones (48-36). Pete Pillitteri was the main architect behind the Curling Me Softly take down of Girls with Stones (41-26). Blaire Feichter and Curl Jam pulled away from Stone Cold Maidens down the stretch (39-34).
Steve Chambers / Jamestown Honda Wednesday 6:30 League
Adam Paterniti and Travis Higgs led the charge for Got Stones. They found a way to slide past Keepin’ it Cool (38-23) and Ice Ice Baby (33-26). Nick Kahanic and Steve Shelters pulled The Brush Offs out of muddy water in nail biters with 12 oz. Curlers (28-26) and Stuart Tool & Die (21-18). Rolling Stones were the other 2-0 team that didn’t have things easy. Katie Allenson and Jason Crowell found a way to get it done against Perfect Stones (19-18) and Ice Holes (25-22). Steve Ryberg and Curls Gone Wild blew the doors off Stuart Tool & Die (43-20). Dave Barber would help Smokin’ Rocks escape The Ice Men (34-31). However, Nike Nygren would hit key shots at the end to elevate The Ice Men over Curls Gone Wild (39-33). Marty Richau and Ice Holes didn’t play nice with Team No Name (40-27). Kevin Gastol rallied 12 oz. Curlers by In the House (28-19) to split the night. Russ Bonfiglio and In the House were triumphant the next time out after sending Keepin’ it Cool packing (36-27). Cathy Panebianco was the MVP for Perfect Stones in their (30-23) ambush of Smokin’ Rocks.
Steve Chambers / Jamestown Honda Wednesday 7:30 League
12 oz. Curlers opened things up with two wins against Axiom (48-29) and Sub Zero (40-33) behind Eric Scolton and Tim Sturges. Jen Anderson carried the workload for Barney’s Hoof Trimming. They knocked off QUEST (42-25) and put Trouble Makers in timeout (34-28). Rachel Rollman helped Ice & Easy breeze by Rand Machine (32-27) and Haggy’s Jr. Curling (37-27). On the Rocks witnessed Kayla Fardink step up to the hack nicely. When her name was called, she delivered big shots against QUEST (23-22) and HCH Interiors (27-24). Tom Lassen picked up the first win for HCH Interiors in their backyard curling debut; they found a way to get by Sub Zero (32-29). Dan Challingsworth and Rand Machine started out the winter campaign, falling in their first slate, they rebounded nicely versus Trouble Makers (29-25). Brittany Youngberg and House Hunters feasted on Haggy’s Jr. Curling (20-18).
Ryan Deppas / Legend Group Friday 4:30 League
Curlews took down both past champions, Tracy’s Dog (44-29) and Cold Beer Here (38-36) behind stellar play of Gary and Heidi Bletsch. Steve and Dawn Columbare got right back into the swing of things of the winter session with their outstanding play, as they helped Lions & Bears defeat Neil’s Propane (40-34) and Frost Bitten Twice Shy (36-17). Ken and Liz Kaltenbach carried the Big stick, as they slid Curl Jam to two victories over Sweeping Beauties (35-30) and Bemus Boulders (45-24). Sweeping Beauties bounced back with an impressive win over Neil’s Propane (60-58) in a barn burner, behind the veteran play of Chuck Ludwig. Peter Sullivan took care of business in the battle of Bemus, as his Bemus Boulders knocked off the Bemus Sliders (55-34). Tracy’s Dog also took care of the Sliders (48-41), as Joanna Paterniti showed off her curling prowess. Frost Bitten Twice Shy opened up their season with a (38-35) victory over On the Rocks, behind strong play from Jodi Smith. On the Rock rebounded past Ba Na Ma Na (50-33), with Kris Jacobson leading the way.
