Records Fall As JCC Swim & Dive Competes At Snowflake
CORTLAND — Records are made to be broken, and that’s exactly what the Jamestown Community College (JCC) men’s swimming and diving team did during the Snowflake Open hosted by SUNY Cortland. The men’s 200 medley relay team took down the program mark with a time of 1:46:32. That group consisted of Cameron Milewski, Christian Merrill, Zach Johnson, and Kyle Dean. That was just the start for Dean and Milewski. Dean also broke the school records in the 200 back, 100 back, and 50 back, while Milewski now owns the top spots in the 1 meter 11 dive and 3 meter six dive.
“We put a lot of focus on this weekend for our midseason meet,” said head coach Todd Conklin. “It was really good to see the kids react and have a lot of record-breaking times, personal bests, and national qualifying swims,” he added.
The event pitted JCC against three other SUNY schools (Cortland, Oneonta, and Potsdam), all of which are four-year programs. Both of the Jayhawks’ men’s and women’s programs finished third in the invite.
Aside from the records, the other top finishers for the men were as follows. Dean took third in the 100 back and fifth in the 50 free. Johnson placed fourth in both the 200 breast and 100 breast. Milewski’s dives were scored second in the 3 meter and fourth in the 11 meter. Lastly, Owen Slojkowski grabbed fourth in the 1650 free.
On the women’s side, the Jayhawks coming home in the top five started with Ella Fosberg, Sophia Gervasio, Haleigha Hardy, and Addison Lawson’s fourth in the 800 free relay. JCC placed fifth in the 200 medley relay with the team of Deriree Putt, Hardy, Anna Jones, and Emily Swan. Hard also finished fourth in the 400 individual medley (IM) and 200 breast. Jones clocked in third in the 400 IM. Putt earned second in the 100 back and 200 back.
“I feel this puts us in a really good spot at our midway point of our season. We all know that we have a lot of work still ahead of us, but with winter break coming, we’ll have a lot of time to get things right in our training. For the kids, it was really great for them to see their hard work that they have been putting in so far come to fruition with lifetime-best swims,” said Conklin.
The Jayhawks schedule will be nothing but practice for the next month. JCC doesn’t return to competition until Jan. 18 when it hosts the Jamestown Invite at noon.
