Quakers Pull Away From Red & Green
For nearly eight minutes, Jamestown hung with Orchard Park in Tuesday night’s Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 girls basketball game at McElrath Gymnasium.
Then the Quakers’ experience took over.
Behind a 16-0 run spanning the first and second quarters, Orchard Park seized control and rolled to an easy 72-26 victory.
Ella Hernandez led the way with 19 points, Halle Senfield had 16, Erin Haggerty added 12 and Caroline Brown chipped in 10 to help the Quakers outscore the extremely young Red & Green 57-17 in the final three periods.
It will be a growing process over the coming months for Jamestown, which started two juniors (Anna Engquist and Abbee Brandow), one freshman (Aiyanna Stam) and two eighth-graders (Carley Daniels and Payton Gibbs).
Engquist led the Red & Green (2-0, 0-1), which was coming off nonleague wins over Salamanca and Wilson to open the season, with 12 points and Stam grabbed 13 rebounds.
