JCC Women Improve To 8-1 On Season

Another day, another win for the Jamestown Community College women’s basketball team, which made it eight wins in its last nine games with a dominant 69-36 victory over Genesee CC on Wednesday.

The Jayhawks jumped out to a 9-point lead early on a transition bucket from Kaleigha Plett for 2 of her 12 on the night. Jamestown CC was up 11-2 early in the first quarter.

The edge hit double-digits later in the first on a layup from Kendra Altadonna, who scored a team-high 16 points off the bench.

Halfway through the second quarter, Jamestown CC doubled up the Cougars on a jumper from Altadonna to make it 27-13 for the home squad.

Jamestown CC went on another run to end the half, a short jumper from Plett saw the score balloon to 42-16.

Jamestown CC was on cruise control most of the second half.

The highlight for many in the stands was reserve Melissa Carmona getting into the game and knocking down a pair of jump shots.

Mbali Mhlanga and Courtney Martin led the way in rebounds with 14 and eight, respectively.

Jennica Berens tossed out 10 assists in her limited action.

The win moves Jamestown CC to 8-2 on the year.

The ladies are off until next Tuesday when they play host to four-year school Villa Maria out of Buffalo at 5 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Jamestown Community College men’s basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of Genesee Community College 84-74 on Wednesday night.

Jamestown CC started the game on fire from deep, with Federico Foddai knocking down back-to-back 3s for a quick 6-point lead.

The opening onslaught didn’t stop there for the Jayhawks. A triple from Travis Castro at the five-minute mark saw Jamestown CC get up 16-8.

Genesee CC pulled to within four late in the half before Tamir Barrant started to find his stroke. The Jayhawks freshman stopped the bleeding with a baseline drive and bucket for 2 of his game-high 31, and Jamestown was back up 6.

Jamestown CC held the lead the entire first half until the 39-second mark when a layup from Damont Hanton gave Genesee CC its first lead.

The Jayhawks would go to the break trailing by 3, 40-37.

Jamestown CC pulled within 2 later in the half on a Gabriel Mastrosimone paint move that led to an and-one opportunity that he knocked down.

That’s as close as Jamestown CC could get, with Genesee CC quickly opening up a 13-point advantage after that.

The Jayhawks clawed until the bitter end, but couldn’t get over the hump.

The loss sets Jamestown CC back to 4-9 on the season.

The Jayhawks go on the road next Tuesday to visit Cuyahoga CC for a 7 p.m. tip.
