Falconer Posts OT Win Over Olean
FALCONER — The Falconer boys basketball team has found itself on the wrong side of a couple close games this season and it looked like that was coming again on Thursday evening.
However, Donovan Delaney hit a clutch 3-pointer that sent the Golden Falcons to overtime and they dominated the Huskies from there for a 56-46 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 victory.
“The biggest thing we’ve been talking about and emphasized tonight was finishing games,” Falconer head coach Jordan Goold stated. “Really focused on the league, the Fredonia and Dunkirk games we just have to finish the games. We’re two possessions away from 5-1 and we found ourselves in the position tonight and that was the message. Saying finish, finish, finish and overtime they dominated.”
Not only did Falconer dominate the overtime period, but it was nearly perfect, outscoring Olean 11-1 and carrying the offensive load for Falconer was star junior Roger Markham. While Delaney sent the game to overtime, Markham finished things up scoring 7 of his 22 points in overtime, hitting five free throws in the period.
“Defense won us the game,” Goold stated. “We made a little push in the second and then we really locked in for the second half. We played some winning level defense, we dominated overtime defensively and offensively.”
Olean jumped out to an early lead, outscoring the Golden Falcons 18-9 in the first quarter. Then Falconer limited the Huskies to single-digit scoring in both the second and third quarter.
The Huskies (1-3, 0-2) were led by Mykel Rivera with 15 points, while Delaney finished with 10 points for the Golden Falcons (3-3, 2-2).
