Calimeri Earns 100th Win At Akron Holiday Tournament
AKRON — Carmine Calimeri has already accomplished quite a bit in his wrestling career and this Saturday he added another accolade at the 56th Akron Holiday Tournament. The Southwestern junior secured his 100th with and dominated his way to winning the 131-pound weight class with pins over Churchville Chili’s Malik Abdullah in 0:22, Newfane’s Ryley Mahoney in 0:16, Frontier’s Balin Ramella in 1:32 and then a technical fall against Amherst’s Mohsin Ali to win the title 22-7.
Calimeri was not alone atop the podium for the Trojans as both Adrian and Miles Torres won their respective weight classes.
Adrian won at 101 pounds with a pin over North Tonawanda’s Spencer Livergood in 1:04, then he defeated Albion’s Justin Mengs by technical fall 17-2 and won it all with a 7-3 decision against Cameron Crumpler of Niagara Falls. Miles worked his way out of the middle of the 116-pound bracket first pinning Alden’s Hayden McKibben in 1:16, then a technical fall over Amherst’s Ahmed Al Nuaim 19-4, a major decision over Lafayette’s Reverien Nshimirimana 11-1 and he claimed the title with a 14-8 decision against Lackawanna’s Raydon Abdallah.
Those three victories allowed Southwestern to finish ninth with 75.5 points, but Jamestown finished higher at fifth with 86.5 and Frontier won the tournament overall with 133 points.
Cole Bloomquist highlighted the tournament for the Red & Green finishing atop the 170-pound bracket. Bloomquist began with a major decision over Brennen Rice of Lake Shore 9-0, he then pinned Albion’s Chris Almonte in 1:10, he followed that up with a semifinal pin over Lafayette’s Joe Littlejohn in 3:06 and he won the tournament with a 7-2 decision over North Tonawanda’s Ilimdar Khasanov.
Jamestown also received a pair of third-place finishes from Tyler Zwald and Zachary Little at 138 and 108 pounds, respectively.
Zwald first pinned East Aurora-Holland’s Tyler Schoenthal in 1:37 before being relegated to the consolation bracket in a narrow decision to Lackawanna’s Adam Algawani 8-6. He then turned things around with a pin over Lockport’s Charles Johnson III in 0:55, then he pinned Churchville-Chili’s Nathan Frost in 0:45, then came a 9-2 decision over Lackawanna’s Abdulhamid Albaneh and he took third with a pin against Attica-Batavia’s Luke Gutman in 2:37.
At 108 pounds, Little first defeated Lyndonville’s Chanse Amsdill 7-1 before being sent to the consolation bracket by eventual champion Sean McDonald of Starpoint via pin in 5:16. Then working to third he pinned Attica-Batavia’s Marc Cook in 1:34, then came a 17-2 technical fall against Lackawanna’s Hani Nashir and he finished with a 3-0 decision against Amsdill.
Salamanca’s Karen Hardy won third place at 285 pounds for the Warriors first with a pin over North Tonawanda’s Jeffrey Soon in 0:46, but was relegated to the consolation bracket by eventual champion Akron’s James Crooks by pin at 5:59. Hardy then pinned Lafayette’s Romello Dunn in 1:32 and finished with a pin over Frontier’s Jose Escalera-Vazquez in 4:33.
Also on the podium for Salamanca was Conner Seeley at 152 pounds, falling short in the third-place match against Frontier’s Kyle Pirone by major decision 12-4.
