Swanson Named DIII POY
Co-Champs Westfield/Brocton, Maple Grove Place 4 On First Team
The Westfield/Brocton boys soccer team was unable to end Maple Grove’s reign of supremacy in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division III, but it was able to join them atop the standings this year.
The Wolverines and Red Dragons both finished 6-1-1 to grab a share of the league title. As a result, each team was awarded four First-Team selections, but it was Westfield/Brocton senior Carson Swanson taking the top honor as Player of the Year.
Swanson carried the Wolverines offense with a whopping 26 goals and 19 assists in all competitions this year, accounting for 71% of the team’s scoring. Westfield/Brocton’s biggest league result was a 4-4 tie to start the season against Maple Grove in which Swanson had four points, including a hat trick, with two goals in the final five minutes to bring the score level.
Fellow Westfield/Brocton seniors Tristen Phillips with six goals and three assists on defense and Zach Maguire with two goals from midfield earned First-Team selections as did junior Anthony Gatto scoring eight goals and seven assists at midfield.
Westfield/Brocton also received Second-Team selections in Danny Bratton, Isaac Stoughton, Mason Baum and Nolan Anderson.
Maple Grove once again nabbed a share of the league title and was rewarded with four First-Team selections. Representing the Red Dragons are sophomore Ty Oste, who scored four goals and two assists from the midfield, senior defender Ryan Lockwood with two goals and two assists, senior midfielder Drew Oste with 14 goals and 12 assists, and senior forward Arley Culver led with 19 goals and added nine assists.
Maple Grove also received Second-Team selections in Jake Reinhardt, Dan Schlemmer, Ty Kraft and Liam Colburn.
Chautauqua Lake finished second in the league, but managed to play spoiler on Maple Grove’s season delivering the Red Dragons their only loss. The Eagles earned two individual awards with Connor Barnes honored as the Coach of the Year and Nate Henry received the league Sportsmanship Award.
A trio of Chautauqua Lake seniors were named First-Team selections in midfielder Nate Henry with 15 goals and 15 assists, forward Kameron Press with 10 goals and six assists, and goalkeeper Brendan Klossner, who backstopped an Eagles squad which made 183 saves and three clean sheets on the year.
Chautauqua Lake also received Second-Team selections in Anthony Powell, Lincoln Smith and Evan Riedesel.
North Collins earned two First-Team selections in senior midfielder Zander Miller with a goal and four assists, and sophomore midfielder Neven Sheehy with six goals and six assists.
North Collins also received Second-Team selections in Scott Armbruster and Lucas Demmerly.
Silver Creek/Forestville senior Alex Karnes scored seven goals to earn the team’s lone First-Team selection.
Nathan Mays was a Second-Team selection for Silver Creek/Forestville.
Jim Enser was named the Referee of the Year for CCAA DIII.
