“For being the first time most of these kids swam the longer format, the coaches are happy with the progress we are making. We all know we have a lot to improve on and know that in three weeks we could be a whole different team when we finish the first half of the season at Cortland,” said head coach Todd Conklin. “We had a bunch more national cuts and some new records. We are building more confidence each meet, and our young team is getting better.” Next up is the Cortland Snowflake Invitational, Dec. 6-7 at SUNY Cortland.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

SANBURN — Jamestown Community College’s women’s basketball team saw its four-game winning streak snapped in a 71-59 loss to Lackawanna College in the SUNY Niagara Tip-Off Classic.

Jamestown CC looked good in the first, closing the opening quarter on a 10-0 run, with Kaleigha Plett sparking things off the bench. The sophomore scored 4 of her 9 during the run. Jamestown held a 14-9 lead after the opening frame.

The second quarter was a different story. Lackawanna outscored the Jayhawks 23-10 to take a 32-24 advantage into the half.

Quarter number three was more of the same, with Jamestown CC dropping those 10 minutes by five, 21-16. Jamestown CC was able to get something going behind sophomore Jennica Berens, who paced Jamestown CC with 13 on the afternoon, but the deficit was still pushed to 13 heading to the final quarter.

Jamestown CC would win the final frame, but only by one, not enough to overcome the hole they had dug. Sophomore Myla Truitt was the only other Jayhawk to hit double-digits, as she scored 11 on the day.

The loss knocks Jamestown CC down to 4-2 on the year.

Jamestown CC stays on the road Wednesday at 6 p.m. when they visit Penn State Dubois.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

SANBORN — The Jamestown Community College men’s basketball team had the game in the hands of Marcus Wynter in regulation, but his short jumper drew iron in the 80-76 overtime loss.

The game was a seesaw battle throughout. Jamestown CC closed the halftime gap to just one point as they went to the break, down 34-33.

The teams exchanged jabs throughout the second half. Lackawanna went to take a late lead, but the Jayhawks CC’s defense stood tall to give Jamestown CC one last possession in regulation.

Jamestown CC dribbled the clock down to the buzzer, where Wynters possible game-winner fell just short, and they went to overtime tied 72-72.

Jamestown CC couldn’t buy a bucket in the extra period, being outscored 8-4 to drop the game 80-76.

Jamestown CC is now 1-7 on the year, with their last two losses being by a combined 13 points.

The Jayhawks finally open their home schedule when they host Garrett College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
