JCC Men Split Pair Over Weekend
Jamestown Community College’s men’s basketball team was in need of a confidence boost heading into the Thanksgiving break, and they found it through hot shooting in a 112-50 win over Onondaga CC on Sunday.
Jamestown CC opened up a quick 10-point lead behind the slick scoring of freshman Marcus Wynter, whose fastbreak layup made it 19-9. Wynter led all scorers with 22.
Halfway through the half, Jamestown saw its edge swell to 30-15 behind another transition layup, this one by Federico Foddai, who dropped 21 points on the day.
Onondaga would cut the deficit down to nine at the 3:07 mark, with Jamestown CC up 36-27 there, but the Jayhawks answered with another run.
Foddai buried a pair of 3s, then Tamir Barrant picked the pocket of a Blazer and finished with a bucket to make it 45-27 Jamestown CC. Barrant had 14 on the afternoon.
Jamestown CC took a 45-29 advantage to the break.
In the second, it was more of the same for Jamestown CC; Travis Castro opened the second stanza with back-to-back 3s. He also finished the day with 21 points.
In all, Jamestown CC had five players reach double- digits, with Joey Valerio joining the fun with 10 points.
As a team, Jamestown CC shot 14 of 31 from 3, 45.2% in the game, which propelled the 62-point win.
Jamestown CC is now 2-8 on the year with the win.
They’re back on the home court on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. when Lakeland CC visits Jamestown.
On Saturday, Jamestown CC opened its home schedule with undefeated Garrett College coming to town, and a slow start stymied any chance Jamestown CC had in the 89-66 loss.
The Jayhawks found themselves in a quick 10-2 hole before Robert Russel stopped the bleeding with a layup to make it 10-4.
The Lakers kept the pressure up, taking a 25-4 advantage to the midway point of the first half.
Jamestown CC started to claw back thanks to the shooting and passing of Wynter. The freshman scored five points with two assists in a 10-0 Jamestown run to make it 25-14. He finished the game with 13 points, eight assists and eight rebounds.
Garrett closed the half strong as the Jayhawks went to the break trailing 49-29.
The second half was more of the same, with the Jamestown CC deficit ballooning to 67-40.
Jamestown closed the gap late to make it a 23-point loss behind some shooting from Foddai, who scored 13, Castro had a team-high 15, and Ilyass Kaichi added 12 off the bench.
WRESTLING
The Jamestown Community College wrestling team had another solid showing, this time at the New York State Collegiate Championships.
Jamestown CC’s Jonathan Bedoya finished third in the 197-pound division.
Ryan Parton took sixth at 141 pounds.
Assistant coach and former Jayhawk Kyle Keefe took fifth place at 174 pounds. Keefe wrestled as a Jamestown CC unattached participant.
As a group, Jamestown CC finished 15th out of 20 teams.
The wrestlers have a small break before returning to the mats on Friday, Dec. 6, at 5:30 p.m. when they head to SUNY Niagara for the Niagara Duals.
