Jayhawks’ Hockey Team Splits Weekend Road Games
Jamestown Community College’s club hockey team split the weekend, with a 6-2 win on Saturday over Alfred State after a 5-4 loss on Friday to Erie CC.
On Friday, the Jayhawks trailed 4-1 early in the second period before they began to rally. Goals from Jed Hirliman and Brandon Smith cut the deficit to 4-3 heading to the third.
The Kats made it 5-3 midway through the period, before Spencer Bell made it a 5-4 game with just minutes to play. Jamestown CC wasn’t able to break through again in the one-goal loss.
The Jayhawks will be back in action when they return home for a 7 p.m. game on Nov. 23.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
JCC WINS PAIR
The Jamestown Community College’s women’s basketball team won a pair of road games over the weekend to run its winning streak to three.
On Friday, the Jayhawks shot 50% from the floor en route to a 79-65 victory over Cuyahoga (Ohio) CC.
Leading the way for Jamestown CC were Courtney Martitn with 16 points, Myla Truitt with 15, Tyesha Wilson with 14 and Mbali Mhlanga with 12.
The Jayhawks led 23-11 after the first quarter, 33-28 at halftime and outscored the hosts 46-37 after the break.
On Saturday, Jamestown CC ran its winning streak to three straight following a 66-58 win over Clark State (Ohio) College.
Freshman Alyson Canfield poured in a game-high 21 points, including four made 3-pointers, to pace the winners (3-1). Truitt added 13 points for the Jayhawks, while Mhlanga grabbed 14 rebounds and Kendra Altadonaa added nine.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
JAYHAWKS WIN FIRST
ROCHESTER — Jamestown Community College’s men’s basketball team came home from the Monroe CC basketball tournament with a 1-1 record after topping Sullivan County CC 98-60 before falling to Cecil College 91-78.
A fantastic night of shooting the ball propelled the Jayhawks to the win over Sullivan. The Jayhawks shot 51.4% from the floor, including 52% from 3-point land.
Jamestown CC was led by freshman Travis Castro, who poured in a game-high 30 points with six makes from beyond the arc.Marcus Wynter (15), Federico Foddai (13), and Robert Russel (10) also hit double digits.
Wynter also led the team in rebounding with 11 to finish off a double-double.
The celebration was short-lived with a game against Cecil on deck.
The Jayhawks looked strong in the early going, building a lead as much as 18 in the first half, but attrition took them down as the Jayhawks only traveled eight guys for the tournament.
Foddai led the way with 22 points; Tamir Barrant was just behind with 20. Castro’s 17 and Gabriel Mastrosimone’s 11 rounded out those in double figures.
Wynter, again, had a double-double, this time adding 12 assists.
