Frewsburg Claims 6th Straight Class C Title
ALLEGANY — Frewsburg head coach Scott Stone claims that every Section VI championship his teams win feels different.
Regardless, it’s getting a little old.
The Bears won their sixth straight Class C title with a 2-0 shutout of Randolph at Allegany-Limestone High School on Friday night.
“Every one feels great. Every year it’s a different team. We have to figure it out every single year,” Stone said postgame. “These girls work hard. Every year we get to this point we’re grateful for it. I’m extremely proud to coach this team.”
No. 2 Frewsburg jumped on top quickly. In the fourth minute, Audrey Eckwahl hit a corner kick into the 18-yard box that bounced around before Taytum Jimerson shot it off of her sister, Ava, for a 1-0 lead.
“We always want to score early. At 1-0, that doesn’t mean anything. It’s just game on at that point,” Stone said. “It does relax you a little bit and put a little pressure on them, but it doesn’t really change the style of play for us.”
The fifth-seeded Cardinals, who rallied past No. 4 Portville and No. 1 Holland on the road to get into Friday’s final, didn’t back down. In fact, the game remained 1-0 through halftime.
“We take nobody lightly. They played an extremely good game. You could tell that they wanted it,” Stone said. “We’ve never played in a final that was easy, we didn’t expect it to be easy today. We played for 80 minutes.”
Frewsburg created some breathing room in the 49th minute. Kaylee Cappa hit a corner into the box that found Ava Jimerson. The Bears’ leading scorer passed to Eckwahl, who looked to have a goal until Randolph keeper turned her away. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the ball made its way back to Ava Jimerson, who buried her Section VI-leading 43rd goal of the season.
Randolph was credited with just one shot on goal against Frewsburg’s Elysse Gruber.
“I feel like our defense played great,” Stone said. “(Randolph) had a couple of free kicks and a couple of corner kicks that we did give up. They stood tall and were able to bend but not break.”
The Bears will take on Section V’s winner at 11 a.m. next Saturday at Williamsville East High School. Williamson beat Geneseo 4-3 in penalty kicks and Byron-Bergen topped Kendall 1-0 on Friday night to earn spots in the Rochester area’s Class C crossover game Tuesday at Caledonia-Mumford High School.
“We know no matter what comes out of Section V, it’s going to be a great soccer team,” Stone said. “We know who we are. We have to go up there and give it everything we’ve got. If we play our best we can come away with a win.”
