Golden Cougars, Trojans Advance
FALCONER — Kylie Kress scored her second goal of the game with 43 seconds remaining as No. 2 Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove slammed the door on No. 10 East Aurora with a 3-1 victory in a Section VI Class B girls soccer quarterfinal Friday afternoon at Bill Race Field.
Kress scored from Julianna Roth in the third minute to give the Golden Cougars a 1-0 lead that they would hold on to until halftime.
After the break, Mary Lundmark scored from Roth in the 48th minute to make it 2-0.
East Aurora pulled within a goal with 1:06 remaining as they tapped home a corner kick inside the box.
After the ensuing kickoff, Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove controlled the ball before sending a long ball that Kress ran under and put home for the 3-1 victory.
“We told them, as much as we could, to keep the foot on the pedal and stay aggressive,” Golden Cougars head coach said of his team’s mindset following the Blue Devils’ goal. “Whenever we play not to get scored on, is when we get scored on. We wanted to stay on the offensive.”
Ellyson Baglia made four saves in net for the Golden Cougars, who will host No. 3 Royalton-Hartland in a Wednesday semifinal.
SOUTHWESTERN ADVANCES
WEST ELLICOTT — No. 4 Southwestern scored a pair of second-half goals to put away No. 5 Akron 3-0 in a Class B quarterfinal at Charles A. Lawson Field.
Marlana Cresanti opened the scoring for the Trojans in the final minute of the first half off an assist by Kenzie Rogers.
After halftime, Rogers scored from Cresanti in the 60th minute and Avery Johnson scored from Ellie Pearson in the 79th minute.
Braya Beaver made 10 saves in goal for Southwestern, which will travel to No. 1 Allegany-Limestone for a Wednesday semifinal.
Avery Wolfe made 13 saves for the Tigers.
RANDOLPH ADVANCES IN SHOOTOUT
PORTVILLE — Gianna Bowles scored on a penalty kick with a minute left in regulation and No. 5 Randolph won a shootout over No. 4 Portville in a Class C quarterfinal.
Gianna Bowles, Quinn Pence, Sara Smith and Kyler Patterson all scored in the shootout as the Cardinals outlasted the Panthers 4-2.
Stella Smith made 12 saves in net for Randolph.
Grace Gariepy scored in the first half for the Panthers and Bella Morales made four saves in net.
The Cardinals will travel to No. 1 Holland for a Tuesday semifinal.
WILSON ELIMINATES EAGLES
WILSON — No. 3 Wilson beat No. 6 Chautauqua Lake 2-1 in a Class C quarterfinal.
The Lakewomen will travel to No. 2 Frewsburg for a Tuesday semifinal.
