Frewsburg Improves To 2-0 In Football

WELLSVILLE — Trent Lewis ran for 112 yards and four touchdowns as Frewsburg improved to 2-0 with a 30-24 8-man football win over Wellsville on Friday night.

The Bears, with a roster of just 14 players, took control of the game right from the opening kickoff as Chase Haglund almost returned it for a second straight week. The visitors took the ball at the Wellsville 48-yard line and on their second run play, Blake Weaver tore down the field for 42 yards getting knocked out at the 6-yard line. Lewis finished the drive two plays later with a quarterback sneak for a 6-0 lead.

On Wellsville’s second possession, the Lions scored on a 29-yard pass from quarterback Brennen Geffers to Trenton Green. The Lions took their only lead by converting the 2-point conversion to make it 8-6.

The Bears came back with a 15-yard touchdown run by Lewis and a 2-point conversion from Haglund to finish the first quarter with a 14-8 lead.

In the second quarter, Lewis scored again from 1 yard out and Haglund got his second 2-point conversion run as the Bears took a 22-8 lead.

Wellsville got the ball back with under a minute left in the half, and hit a long 58-yard touchdown pass seven seconds before halftime to make it 22-14.

Both teams scored in the third quarter, with Lewis scoring his fourth touchdown on an 8-yard run, while Wellsville scored on a 5-yard run by Xander Outman.

The fourth quarter was all about defense as Frewsburg’s defense fought off a turnover and a plethora of penalties that backed the Bears up. Frewsburg got its offense the ball back with an incredible goaline stand led by tackles for losses by Branden Francis and Henry Eckert. Dre Fountaine defended Wellsville’s last-ditch effort to score.

Weaver and Haglund added 121 yards combined on the ground, while Lewis completed seven passes for 84 yards through the air. Defensively, Weaver was in on 10 tackles, including a sack, and recovered a fumble; Francis had two tackles for a loss and a fumble recovery; and Eckert had a tackle for a loss, including a sack.
