LOCKPORT — Dominic Gonzalez is no stranger to directing an offense, having shared that responsibility during Jamestown’s run to the state Final Four in basketball in March.
Six months later, he apparently is getting more and more comfortable serving in that same role on the football field, too.
The junior quarterback passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more to help the Red & Green roll over Lockport 58-10 in a Class AA game Saturday afternoon at very warm Emmet Belknap Intermediate School.
Combined with two rushing touchdowns apiece from Cole Bloomquist and Chase Bonta, and a physical, often dominant, defense Jamestown was just too much for the Lions.
“Nothing is given to you in these AA games, and going on the road (in the heat) presents some challenges,” Red & Green head coach Tom Langworthy said, “but I really liked the way that we played and the way we started the game.”

Jamestown (2-1, 1-0) was impressive from the start, scoring touchdowns on five straight possessions, allowing it to build a 34-10 lead by halftime. Leading the way were Gonzalez, who had TD passes of 22 and 9 yards to Carson Panebianco and Ayden Samuelson respectively, and he also found the end zone himself on a 6-yard keeper.
“Dom is a great athlete,” Langworthy said. “He’s poised, he gets better every week and he gives us a lot of different elements to our offense. … He’s still learning the offense as a young quarterback, (but) he had a great game. I’m really happy to see him improve week to week.”
After the break, Bonta, who finished with, unofficially, 169 yards rushing, scored on a 15-yard run; Bloomquist bulled in from the 2; Anthony Blakeslee tackled Lockport quarterback Graham Schultz in the end zone for a safety after a bad snap from center; and Gonzalez found the end zone again on a 3-yard run to close out the scoring.
Lockport’s only points came on Tanner Schultz’s 26-yard field goal in the first quarter and Jahkwon Davis’ 61-yard touchdown reception on a screen pass in the second period.
Beyond that, Jamestown’s defense — led by Bloomquist and Tommy Pratton — was up to the challenge, including a goal-line stand in the first quarter in which the Lions (0-3, 0-2) had to settle for the 3-pointer after having a first-and-goal from the 1.

“We dominated the game,” Langworthy said. “I thought we played really tough. We played our style of football. We were able to dictate what happened in the game and how the game was played.”
Waiting for the Red & Green on Friday is Bennett at All-High Stadium in Buffalo.
“Bennett the last three years has been to the state finals twice, won it once and has been to the Final Four,” Langworthy said. “They’ve been the team to beat in AA. That’s a game we know is going to be a challenge, but it’s also a great opportunity. I think we’re in a good place right now. We’ve got to get back to work on a short week, and we’re looking forward to it.”
NOTES: Gonzalez completed 4 of 9 passes for 62 yards. Three of those connections were to Panebiano for 53 yards and the TD. … Recording interceptions for the Red & Green were Jericho Thagard and Josiah Cruz. … Tackle totals were unavailable at press time. … Jamestown is averaging 42.6 points per game through its first three games. … Red & Green kicker Lincoln Carpenter booted four successful point-after tries.
