Calph’s 76 Leads Wednesday Travel League

WATERFORD, Pa. — Robert Calph won this week’s Wednesday Travel League event at The Ridge Golf Club with the low round of 76.

Josh Hilliker finished second, a shot behind with 77. Dave Wallace was third with 78. Hilliker led the front nine with 36, while Calph led the back nine with 39. Dave Criscione and Tim Walawender won the B and C Flights, respectively. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Jim Ellman Sr.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Hilliker (Nos. 1 and 5), Calph (No. 10) and Wallace (No. 14); B Flight — Criscione (Nos. 1 and 8), Gary Haase (No. 3), Pat Weaver (No. 5), John Waterman (No. 7), Mike Willoughby (No. 9), Pete Pinkoski (No. 13) and Jeff Marsowicz (No. 16); C Flight — Lenny Leszkowicz (Nos. 2, 11 and 14), Walawender (Nos. 3 and 16) and Dan Kaszuba (No. 18).

Closest to the pin were: Criscione (No. 2), Calph (Nos. 6 and 11) and Jeff Nelson (No. 17). Winners of the Steeplechase were: Wallace (A Flight), Willoughby (B) and Bob Kujawa (C).

Robert Calph moved past Gary Richardson for fifth place on the All-Time Points List. Dave Criscione and Mike Willoughby both passed Paul Olkowski on the All-Time Points List. Criscione now ranks 14th and Willoughby ranks 15th.

This week the league will hold its 10th annual “Commissioner’s Cup.” The event honors the memory of past league commissioner Bruce “Java” Chrabasz. It will take place at Chautauqua Golf Club. The first tee time is at 9:30 a.m. Golfers must be signed up at 716-785-2291 by noon on Monday when foursomes will be finalized.

SEPT. 2

AKRON — Josh Hilliker continued his dominant season with a personal-best Wednesday Travel League round of 69 at Arrowhead Golf Club.

Hilliker joins Ron Rys (64) and Tony Nicosia (69) as the only league golfers to break 70. Hilliker led the front nine with a 2-under par 34 and the back nine with a 1-under par 35. He also won his 15th event of the season, matching the single-season record which he (in 2023) and Robert Calph already shared. Hilliker’s round included six birdies, bringing his season total to 56, breaking the league record of 51 held by Ed Tofil and matched by Hilliker in 2023.

Tim Siragusa, from Houston, Texas, finished second with 74. Calph was third with 76. Also breaking 80 were Ed Tofil (78) and Dave Franklin (79). Calph now holds the single-season record for rounds below 80 with 17. Franklin’s 79 was a personal best in league play. John Bongiovanni Jr. won the B Flight. In the C Flight, Jaime Galarza won on a tiebreaker over Jim Ellman Sr. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was 11-year-old Carter Crabtree.

Closest to the pin were: Wallace (No. 4, just 6 1/2 inches from the cup), Hilliker (No. 8), Siragusa (No. 12) and Gawronski (No. 16). Winners of the Steeplechase were: Hilliker (A Flight), Joe Bifaro (B) and George Domedion (C).

Top point winners were: Hilliker (70), Wallace (45), Kaszuba (35) and Calph (30).
