Tarp Skunks Pull Away Late At Newark
NEWARK — Six runs over the final three innings allowed the Jamestown Tarp Skunks to pull away from the Newark Pilots for a 9-2 win and their first Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League victory of the season Saturday night.
Gage Hayes (Drury University) earned the win with 3 1/3 innings of shutout middle relief, allowing no hits and a walk while striking out six.
Leo Doyle (Wagner College) went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs; DJ Stoianovich (Mansfield University) was 3 for 3 with three RBIs and Kobe Jones (Shorter University) was 2 for 4 with two RBIs to power the Tarp Skunks offense.
Jamestown (1-1) went ahead 2-0 in the top of the second inning. Steve Scarfone (Clarion University) singled with one out and Doyle followed with a double before Stoianovich hit a two-run single.
The Tarp Skunks increased their lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning as Jones led off with a single, went to second on an error and scored on an error.
Newark got a pair of runs off Jamestown starter Sam Hough (Bates College) in the bottom of the fifth inning before Hayes got out of a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout. Hough threw 4 2/3 innings of two-run ball, allowing four hits while walking three and striking out six.
The Tarp Skunks began padding their lead in the top of the seventh inning when Klayton Kiser (Drury University) was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a Stoianovich single.
In the eighth, Henry Juan (Williams College) and Jones walked with one out before a two-out walk to Scarfone loaded the bases. Doyle then hit a two-run single to make it 6-2.
In the three-run ninth, Stoianovich and Connor Kiefer (Alfred State College) walked with no outs and Nigel Sebastianelli (Niagara County Community College) walked with one out before a groundout by Juan plated Stoianovich. Jones followed with a two-run single.
Rob Dorn (University of Maryland-Baltimore County) struck out the side in the ninth for the Tarp Skunks.
Jamestown returns home for a five-game homestand starting tonight at Diethrick Park. After nonleague games against the Salamanca Lizards and Olean Oilers tonight and Tuesday, the Tarp Skunks will host the Niagara Falls Americans, Auburn Doubledays and Rapids again, Thursday through Saturday.
