At 138 pounds and 190 pounds, respectively, Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s Jordan Joslyn and Southwestern’s Tavio Hoose reached the semifinals once again.

Southwestern sophomore Carmine Calimeri, Maple Grove senior Matt Trim and Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer junior Mason Maring also reached the semifinals Friday.

As the tournament goes on your competition is supposed to get tougher, but Calimeri did not get the memo at 131 pounds, securing pins in the prequarterfinals and quarterfinals as the No. 2 seed.

Securing a second-round pin in the prequarterfinals, Calemeri wasted no time in the quarterfinals against No. 7 Zach Rooks from Section V’s Palmyra Macedon, pinning him in 1:11 to advance to the semifinals today.

“I had my warmup match,” Calimeri said about his semifinal. “So I was ready for the second match.”

Calimeri is just one more win away from the final and to get there he will have to go through No. 3 Jayden Duncanson of Section IV’s Tioga.

“I’ve beaten Duncanson before, so I know it’s possible,” Calimeri said about today’s semifinal matchup. “I know I can win. I’ve got to finish my shots, I had a lot on him, I just need to finish him.”

On the other side of the bracket, No. 1 Gavin Mangano of Section XI’s Shoreham-Wading River takes on No. 4 Justin Mullis of Section II’s Hudson Falls.

Joslyn reached the semifinals again, getting past No. 7 Jacob McVige of Section V’s Honeoye Falls-Lima, grinding out a tough victory to set a rematch of last year’s finals at 126 pounds.

“Jordan looked like Jordan, even when he got into tough situations,” said Eagles head coach Ken Rowe. “He finds a way to make it out. His head all year is confident and comfortable, he doesn’t overreact to things this year. When he was younger, he would get frustrated and that’s not the case this year. Even when he gets in a bad position he keeps in his head and keeps wrestling and finds a way to score. This, without question, is one of the deepest and nastiest (brackets). State place-finishers might not place, it’s just filthy. If he continues what he’s been doing he’ll be fine.

Tavio Hoose, like Joslyn, earned his way back into the semifinals with a narrow 4-2 decision over No. 8 Avery Canzano of Section III’s Cortland.

Canzano battled Hoose to a scoreless tie after the first period, but in the second period the returning state champion Hoose took control and never looked back. Earning a takedown to go up 3-1, Hoose opened the third period with an escape for the eventual 4-2 win.

Even with the pressure on, there was never a doubt Hoose would come away with the win.

In his semifinal matchup, Hoose wrestles No. 5 Jesse Mullis of Section II’s Hudson Falls. While the other semifinal is between No. 2 Greyson Meak of Section VIII’s Cold Spring Harbor and No. 3 Luke VanGorden of Section V’s Palmyra Macedon.

“We’ve gone and tried to get him the best competition he possibly can,” Southwestern coach John Vogan said about Hoose. “He’s gone in the final at Eastern States, he’s gone to Fargo and been an All-American. We’ve gone to some big-time tournaments in Grove City where the competition is on this level. He’s used to this, especially being here the third time in a row.”

At 215 pounds, both Trim and Maring made the semifinals.

After giving up the early takedown, No. 5 Trim handled his opponent No. 4 Christian Solano of Eagle Academy Bronx with ease. Trim reversed Solano before securing a two-point near-fall to end the first round 4-2.

Trim then worked over Solano in the second to finally secure a pin at 1:40. The Maple Grove senior must now go through top-seed Sean Kelly of Section III’s Lowville in the semifinals.

Maring’s quarterfinal against No. 19 Matthew Marks of Section III’s South Lewis looked to be over quickly with the Eagles junior building a 7-2 lead after the first period. However, Marks rallied in the second, nearly stealing the match with a pin.

The comeback was not to be, despite needing injury time, Maring closed the door in the third period as he earned a 12-7 decision.

Maring takes on No. 18 Dominic Jones of Section III’s Mount Markham in the semifinals. Jones advanced to the final with an upset pin against No. 2 Matthew Oosterom of Section IX’s Port Jervis.

While Southwestern senior Neves Hoose fell in the quarterfinals, he will be able to finish his career on the podium.

Wrestling on the mat next to his younger brother Tavio, Neves could not replicate the same result in his quarterfinal. The sixth-seeded Hoose was pinned by No. 3 Charles Foster of Section III’s Vernon-Verona-Sherill in the second period.

Foster had Hoose on the run the whole match, but finally was able to secure a pin with 3 seconds left in the period to relegate Neves to the consolation bracket.

Southwestern’s fourth member to reach the state tournament was senior Kenji Walters and after a first-round pin, Walters dropped a pair of matches in the consolation bracket.

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s Jayden Malecki made the best of his opportunity in the consolation bracket. After losing in the prequarterfinals, Malecki earned a pair of wins in the consolation bracket at 190 pounds and has a shot at the podium.

Eagles teammate Thandon Bensink secured a second win in the consolation bracket at 116 pounds, but his quest for the podium was cut short when Talon Kimball of Section III’s Camden pinned him.

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Dylan Newman was relegated to the consolation bracket at 116 pounds and will wrestle No. 4 Talon Kimball of Section III’s Camden on Saturday.

Randolph’s Caden Inkley can still reach the podium at 152 pounds after a strong prequarterfinal win. Inkley was then able to evade a pin, but suffered a 15-0 technical fall to the toughest quarterfinal opponent, 2023 138-pound state champion, the top-seeded Caden Bellis of Section IV’s Tioga.

Bellis dominated his way into another state semifinal, while Inkley moved into the consolation bracket where he can still grab third place.

Gowanda/Pine Valley senior Michael Horth saw his career come to an end in the consolation bracket. Horth suffered a loss by major decision from Broken Enders of Section III’s Cazenovia, finishing his season with a 35-15 record.

In Division 1, both Jamestown’s Zach Little at 108 pounds and Tyler Zwald at 131 pounds lost their first two and only matches at states.

The tournament will resume today at 9:30 a.m.
