Westfield Needs 2 OTs For Consolation Win

OLEAN — Zach Maguire’s bucket courtesy of an assist from Mason Whitesell with 40 seconds remaining, proved to be the difference as Westfield edged Olean 74-70 in double-overtime for consolation honors.

Wolverines’ coach Nolan Swanson was thrilled.

“That’s unbelievable,” he said. “It was so much fun. It got to the point where it went from a little frustrating and annoying to just an epic time.”

Carson Swanson, the coach’s son, poured in 34 points, dished out seven assists, grabbed six rebounds and collected four steals on the heels of a 33-point effort in a first-round loss to Jamestown on Friday.

But, ironically, it was the heads-up play by Whitesell that propelled Westfield to victory.

With the game tied at 70-all with just under a minute in the second extra session remaining, the junior split a double team and feathered a pass to Maguire, who converted the layup. The Huskies turned the ball over on their ensuing possession, Maguire was fouled and he drilled both free throws with 21 seconds left to secure the win.

“Whitesell was our starting point guard last year on jayvees. He had to take care of the ball the whole time on the jayvee squad,” Coach Swanson said. “He doesn’t get that many minutes with us — but he’s going to in the future — and he’s a lefty. He drives in left-handed nicely, so he just had a clear opening because of the overload defense and he made just a simple bounce pass. He made a perfect play. I’m proud of that guy.”

Both teams had chances to win the game at the end of regulation, but couldn’t convert. And at the end of the first overtime, Olean missed a pair of free throws with 10 seconds remaining and Carson Swanson tied it on a driving bank shot with two seconds left.

That set the stage for the second extra session where Westfield did just enough to complete the weekend 1-1.

“Coming back (Saturday) and to have any energy at all when I’m really six or seven guys deep typically and the effort it (took) to play Jamestown (on Friday) at our class size, I just kept saying, ‘Dig down guys, we have to dig deeper.’

“It was just an awesome way to bond together. This kind of weekend does something for a program.”
