JHS XC Helps Runners In 1-Mile Stampede At Jefferson

Panama’s Patrick Warner, left, was the first finisher in the fifth- and sixth-grade race at the 1-mile Stampede at Jefferson Middle School on Saturday.

The weather was perfect for a fall 1-mile Stampede at Jefferson Middle School on Saturday as student-athletes experienced cross country with the help of the Jamestown High School cross country team.

Participants were led by members of the Red Raiders team as they warmed up together and competed on the one-mile course as they tried to finish in the top 10 to win a T-shirt and earn a medal.

In the fifth- and sixth-grade race, Patrick Warner from Panama was the first male finisher in a time of 6:54. This was also the fastest time of the day, which earned him a new pair of running shoes and a pair of running socks to honor the late Rob Liebers. Liebers was a strong supporter of area cross country student-athletes. He believed everyone could be a runner with “a good pair of shoes and a pair of socks.”

Cameron Ruch of Panama (7:03) and Carter Wofford (8:00) of Jefferson finished second and third.

In the girls race, Anna Irgang from Washington finished first in 7:40 with Erin Engquist (Persell) in 8:30 for second, and Paisley Wilson (Bemus Point) placed third in 8:50.
