Watt Becomes Jayhawks All-Time Leading Scorer In Loss; Girls Win
CANANDAIGUA — JCC hit the road for Finger Lakes knowing a record could fall in this one and that’s exactly what happened in the 7th minutes when Alex Watt cashed in an unassisted goal. That score was his 16th of his career, making him the all-time leader in Jayhawk Men’s Soccer history, breaking a tie he held with Greg Bird.
The 1-0 advantage held throughout the half as Finley Newman faced a pair of penalty kicks and scooped them both up to keep the sheet clean.
JCC started sluggish coming out of the break, allowing a pair of goals in the first four minutes to trail 2-1. The equalizer came quickly though as James Cassidy was able to even things up for the Jayhawks.
In the end, the second half blitz from Finger Lakes was too much as JCC fell 4-2. They’re now 0-2 on the year.
Next up for the Jayhawks is a date in Onondaga Saturday at 3:30.
WOMEN OPEN WITH WIN
CANANDAIGUA — It only took one game for new JCC Women’s Soccer Coach Heather Ross to earn her first career victory with the Jayhawks, a 3-0 road win at Finger Lakes Community College.
The scoring started early with a beautiful tic-tac-toe set up for Alexis Lundmark who buried the assist from Sheala Barresi less than two minutes into the game for an early 1-0 advantage.
“If you score early you stay on top,” said Coach Ross. “That is exactly what we did. We controlled the game for the first 39 minutes. Controlled the ball and created opportunities,” she added.
The next opportunity came in the 31st minute when Barresi was at it again with her second of the game, this one unassisted, to make it 2-0 for the Jayhawks as they went to the break.
That score held until five minutes left when Juliet Thuman broke through for her first of the year to make things 3-0 for the visitors.
A good way to start the season for the Jayhawks. One Coach Ross looks to build on “We have a ton to work on, but we are on the right path. I am so proud of the women and what they accomplished today. On to the next.”
Next is a road date with Onondaga Saturday at 1.
