Frewsburg/Southwestern Relay Takes 7th At States
ITHACA — Bruce Johnson has coached swimming at Frewsburg for 45 years.
He’s never had a better relay than this year.
Frewsburg/Southwestern’s 200-yard freestyle relay team swam a 1:26.22 in the Championship Final to finish seventh at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships on Saturday at Ithaca College.
“We were finally able to put four really fast kids together at one time. We finished sixth in the public schools,” Johnson said Saturday evening. “The kids who we had in there are just racers. We thought we had a chance last year, but we were probably one guy short. We’ve had plenty of fast kids, just not all at the same time.”
Freshman Miles Moore led off with a 21.79-second 50 yards followed by senior Brady Lindstrom’s 22.18. Freshman Grady Moore followed with a 21.56 and senior Gannon Moore brought it home with a 20.69 final 50 yards. Catholic school Chaminade won the event in an All-American consideration time of 1:24.58.
“If you would’ve told me at the beginning of the year we were going to swim the times we swam today,” Johnson said, “I wouldn’t have believed you.”
The same quartet rounded out the weekend for the Trojan Bears by winning the B Final of the 400-yard freestyle relay to take 11th place overall with a time of 3:13.53. Miles Moore opened with a 48.89-second 100 yards followed by Lindstrom’s 48.65-second 100.
“Brady Lindstrom was kind of the missing link. He and Gannon provided the leadership for that crew and really for the whole team,” Johnson said. “Brady has come back this year and been a great re-addition to our team.”
Grady Moore went third and swam a 49.47-second 100 yards before Gannon Moore swam a 46.52-second anchor. Section I Horace Greeley won the event in an All-American time of 3:05.53.
“Those two do not like to lose. They are racers. They look at every challenge as an opportunity to make themselves better and faster,” Johnson said of twin brothers Miles and Grady Moore. “They don’t get scared, they just go out and race. You don’t see that many kids with that kind of drive, especially at that age.”
Miles Moore kicked off Saturday’s action by finishing ninth in the C Final and 29th overall in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.27 seconds. Section IV Horseheads senior Cullin Cole won the event with an All-American consideration time of 20.51 seconds. For Johnson, Miles Moore became his first freshman to ever place at the state meet.
Gannon Moore then finished 10th in the B Final and 20th overall in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.94 seconds. Catholic school Chaminade senior Stephen McDonald won the event with an All-American consideration time of 45.07 seconds.
“He was a little disappointed with his 200 time today. He was hoping to go a little faster,” Johnson said. “His relay splits were incredibly fast today.”
Jamestown/Falconer sophomore Conner Dean enjoyed quite a weekend for himself in the central part of the state.
Dean finished seventh in the B Final and 17th overall in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:45.69, and ninth in the B Final and 19th overall in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:45.26. Junior Martin Perecinsky of Section XI Kings Park won the 200-yard freestyle in an All-American consideration time of 1:39.34, while senior Pierre Leroy of Section XI Huntington/Harborfields/Walt Whitman won the 500-yard freestyle in an All-American consideration time of 4:32.42.
Dunkirk/Fredonia/Forestville senior Adam Fred was the final local swimmer competing Saturday. Fred took ninth in the C Final and 29th overall in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.07 seconds. Senior Nicholas Rhodes of Section VIII South Side/Lynbrook took first with an All-American time of 48.97 seconds. Perecinsky, the second-place finisher, also swam an All-American time of 49.07 seconds.
Lancaster senior Aaron Gasiewicz won the 200-yard individual medley in an All-American time of 1:49.04. Senior Christian Lee of Section I Ardsley/Hastings/Edgemont/Dobbs Ferry/Irvington and junior Erik Nadecki of Horace Greeley, finished second and third, respectively. Both reached All-American times.
Junior Nicholas Graham of Tottenville won the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 559.55.
Senior Ryan Nunez of Catholic school Kellenberg Memorial took first in the 100-yard butterfly with an All-American time of 48.53 seconds.
Section II Albany Academy senior Brayden Henkel won the 100-yard breaststroke in an All-American time of 54.33 seconds.
Catholic school St. Anthony’s won the 200-yard medley relay in an All-American time of 1:32.29.
“It’s hard to go back to back, day after day. The meet ran slowly so it was hard to get into a flow,” Johnson said, noting several slower times Saturday than Friday. “It’s nice when the meets get going, the kids are ready and they know when they are going to swim.”
