Jamestown, F/CV Roll To Wins
SANBORN — Carsen Bane’s contributions to Jamestown’s football team have been much appreciated by his teammates, coaches and fans of the program this fall.
Friday night he introduced himself to the rest of Western New York.
As for teammate Sean O’Brien?
Well, the senior linebacker continued to do what he’s been doing for the last two seasons.
Together, the tandem led Jamestown to a 57-26 victory over Niagara Wheatfield in a Class A1 game. The Red Raiders (5-2, 4-0) will entertain Clarence next Friday at Strider Field.
“If we win on Friday, we’ll be division champs,” Jamestown coach Tom Langworthy said. “We’re already talking about the importance of championship games. This will be our first championship opportunity of the year.”
Continued strong play from Langworthy’s skill players will help.
Bane, a junior, rushed for 224 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns; and senior quarterback Trey Drake ran for two TDs and passed for another to highlight another dominant offensive performance for the Red Raiders, who won their fifth straight.
“Carsen is just a very, very great person and an unselfish player,” Langworthy said. “Everything he does is all about the team being successful. … The last five weeks our team has found its way and he has been a part of that.”
Bane scored on runs of 11 and 35 yards; Drake found the end zone on runs of 10 and 2 yards; and O’Brien and Masiah Jones scored on runs of 3 and 45 yards, respectively. Capping the scoring for Jamestown was Drake’s 18-yard TD pass to Darius Freeney. Ella Propheter connected on all seven of her point-after tries and O’Brien had a 2-point conversion run.
The Falcons, who actually led 8-0 in the first quarter, were led by Alexander Fletcher, who passed for 213 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 65 yards on 14 carries and scored another TD, but Niagara Wheatfield, which fell to 0-4 and 1-6, couldn’t overcome Jamestown’s 36-point second half.
“They scored first and that can be difficult to overcome,” Langworthy said. “I thought we handled that well and continued to play our game, even though there were some areas where we weren’t playing our best.”
Defensively, the Red Raiders were led by O’Brien, who amassed 23 tackles, including five for loss, and a sack. He now has 124 stops on the season.
“Sean is in on almost every tackle,” Langworthy said. “He’s such a good player, he’s very instinctive, has a real good feel for the game and he has a good football IQ. He always seems to be at the right place at the right time.”
Supporting O’Brien were Gavin Pantojas (one tackle for loss) and Mason McVinney (three tackles for loss, one sack), who each had 11 stops; and Bane, who had 10 tackles, including four for loss, and two sacks.
