Tarp Skunks Sweep Doubleheader
Korn, Rafalski Throw Gems To Beat Power, Remain In Hunt
Ian Korn and Ryan Rafalski were just what the Tarp Skunks needed.
The two right-handed pitchers sent Jamestown to a doubleheader sweep of the Niagara Power in Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League West Division action Friday evening at Diethrick Park.
With six games remaining in the regular season, the Tarp Skunks’ modest three-game winning streak has put them a game behind the Auburn Doubledays for the fourth and final playoff spot. Auburn beat the first-place Batavia Muckdogs 3-1 on Friday while the Elmira Pioneers, tied with Jamestown for fifth place, beat the last-place Newark Pilots 14-2 in five innings.
While both starters were impressive for the Tarp Skunks on Friday, Rafalski dominated. The Warren Area High School graduate and Mercyhurst University product threw a seven-inning complete-game three-hitter as Jamestown beat the Power 5-0 in the nightcap.
Rafalski threw 60 of his 106 pitches for strikes, walking five while striking out seven to lower his earned run average to 3.98 on the season.
The Tarp Skunks scored three runs in the second inning, all with two outs. Julian Thompson walked on a full count and Johnny Kampes was hit by a pitch before Jordan King also walked. Jack Davis then reached on an RBI fielder’s choice before Mark Tucker hit a two-run single.
In the third inning, Henry Martinez singled and went to second on a wild pitch before a Will Dorrell RBI single.
Jamestown capped the scoring in the fifth inning. Cody Bey singled to lead off the frame and Henry Martinez hit into a fielder’s choice before stealing second and going to third on an error. Pat Bigham then hit an RBI single.
The five runs were plenty for Rafalski who worked around a walk and a single in the first inning before retiring the side in order in the second and third innings. Niagara advanced runners to second in the fifth and seventh innings, but never put a runner on third base.
In Game 1, Korn allowed just two hits and an unearned run in six innings while striking out three. Bryce Jackson relieved Kenny Misik with two outs in the seventh inning and the potential tying run on third base, but after a walk induced a flyout to right field to strand the bases loaded to end the game.
Jamestown scored an unearned run in the first inning before scoring three more in the second. Thompson was hit by a pitch and Jack Davis reached on an error before a safety squeeze bunt made it 2-0. Davis and Tucker later came around to score and make it 4-0.
Royce Frazier walked and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Martinez to make it 5-0 in the fourth inning before the Power sent nine batters to the plate in the seventh to make the game close.
Jamestown will travel to Batavia today for a 7 p.m. game against the first-place Muckdogs at Dwyer Stadium. The Tarp Skunks will then play at Colburn Park in Newark on Sunday at Sal Maglie Stadium in Niagara Falls on Tuesday before returning home for their final home game of the regular season Wednesday against Batavia at 6:30 p.m.
