Tip-Off Tourney Time
Host Jamestown, Frewsburg Advance To United Way Championship Game
Kylie O’Brien scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and Marley Drake added 21 points, including 5 3-pointers, to lead Jamestown to a 73-25 victory over Health Sciences in the first round of the United Way Tip-Off Tournament at McElrath Gymnasium on Friday night.
The win moves the Red Raiders (1-0) into the title game at 7:30 tonight against Frewsburg (3-0), a 64-26 winner over Fredonia in the other first-round game.
“Their wins have been absolutely dominating,” Jamestown coach Ken Ricker said of the unbeaten Bears. “There’s a good chance they’ll set another school record (tonight) as fast as we want to play opposing them. Jeff (Collver) does a great job. I hope we can play with them.”
The Red Raiders didn’t have any issues last night, jumping out to a 37-2 lead after the first quarter.
Behind O’Brien, Drake and Mickia Freeney (5 points, six steals and seven assists), the Red Raiders’ pressing style was on full display in Ricker’s return as head coach after a 10-year hiatus.
“They’re really trying hard,” Ricker said. “Obviously, it’s a unique way to play, so there’s still a lot of growth to be had, but the girls are having fun and want to have success. It’s great to be back.”
Raegan Powers chipped in 7 points and eight rebounds, and Alyson Canfield added 9 points for Jamestown.
Ward had 15 points — all on 3-pointers — to lead Health Sciences.
